Among the coins found in Philadelphia in 1975 during the construction of Interstate 95 were two 1694 William and Mary copper halfpence, two William III 1700 halfpence and an early 1681 Charles II copper Irish halfpenny.
The selection displays how these coins would have look during the 1780's and are especially interesting for comparison with the section on imported British counterfeits and with the sections on American made counterfeit halfpence including the Machin's Mills halfpence, the few unattributed counterfeits, and the related Blacksmith coppers.

The current value of the coin in "very fine" to "extra fine" condition is £3500 to £6000, although a Mr Pinkerton writing at the time that the coins circulated noted that many of the coins in circulation were so worn as to be almost flat.
The coin was introduced in 1983 to replace the Bank of England One Pound note, which ceased to be issued at the end of 1984 and was removed from circulation (though still redeemable at the Bank's offices) on 11 March 1988.
The coin is a continuation of the old Crown coin which continued to be minted after decimalisation with a value of twenty-five pence, although nowhere stating its value.

 Australian 50c Coins
Australian Fifty cent coins although beginning when Australia converted to Decimal Currency in 1966 are the modern circulating equivalent to the British Half-Crown, apart from the obvious shape differences since 1969.
Hoarding the round silver fifty cent piece as well as the subsequent copper-nickel commemorative's seems to have become a national pastime, with almost every Australian having a small hoard of commemorative coins stashed somewhere.
Collectors soon note that the commemorative coins seem to disappear from circulation quite quickly, as they are all gradually removed from circulation by the public.

It appears the coining equipment was wearing out for the agreement stipulated the three subcontractors were limited to six weeks of coining but, if time was lost due to equipment problems, they would be given up to an additional two weeks.
The issue of their legal right to coin Connecticut coppers is unclear, but the manner in which the coins were produced was clearly illegal.
Some fifty years ago Damon Douglas took this to be the site of the mint for the Company for Coining Coppers, but most numismatists suspect this anonymous unconfirmed source may refer to a counterfeit operation, if it was a mint site at all.

Popular coin valuations and the current bullion value of Gold and Silver.
Recently, gold coins have been struck in proof quality and many gold coins, especially proof strikings, coins in mint condition and coins with rarer mint marks are worth slightly more than face value.
These coins are identical to the coins produced in Great Britain at the Royal mint, but to distinguish them a mint mark consisting of a letter or letters will be visible on the coins struck outside the UK.
On the coins of Victoria if a mint mark is present it will either be right in the middle on the back of the coin below the shield (above small flower) or under the Queens neck on the front.
