British coinage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
British prisoners have also come up with several slang terms for British coins, many of which are still heard today: bar was one pound, bed and breakfast half a crown, spratt sixpence, demi fifty pence and chip one shilling.
In 1920, the silver content of all British coins was reduced from 92.5% to 50%, with a portion of the remainder consisting of manganese, which caused the coins to tarnish to a very dark colour after they had been in circulation for a significant period.
All British coins produced since 1662 have been milled; the first milled coins were produced during the reign of Elizabeth I and periodically during the reigns of James I and Charles I, but there was opposition to mechanisation from the moneyers who ensured that most coins continued to be produced by hammering.

British Coins before the Florin, Compared to French Coins of the Ancient Regime
The table at right shows the British coins in common use until the introduction of the two shilling Florin in 1849.
Silver coins would simply become tokens for their face value in gold, regardless of the intrinsic value of silver (so long as this was less than the face value!).
The modern British 5p coin, which is the decimal descendant of the shilling, thus may be said to be the last link to Roman coinage, although, as the solidus, it only existed on paper for the many centuries of the silver penny.

Facts about hammered coinage   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Hammered coins were produced by placing a blank piece of metal (a planchet or flan) of the correct weight between two dies, and then striking the upper die with a hammer to produce the required image on both sides.
In England the first non-hammered coins were produced in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I in the 1560s, but while machine-produced coins were experimentally produced at intervals over the next century, the production of hammered coins did not finally end until 1662.
Up to a couple of dozen coins could be produced at one time from a single mould, when a 'tree' of coins (which often contained features such as a square hole in the centre) would be produced and the individual coins (called cash) would then be broken off.
