British Empire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The British Empire was, at one time, referred to as "the empire on which the sun never sets" because the empire's span across the globe ensured that the sun was always shining on at least one of its numerous colonies.
The period is distinguished by an unprecedented pursuit of what has been termed "empire for empire's sake", aggressive competition for overseas territorial acquisitions and the emergence in colonising countries of doctrines of racial superiority which denied the fitness of subjugated peoples for self-government.
British withdrawal from the southern and eastern parts of Africa was complicated by the region's white settler populations: Kenya had already provided an example in the Mau Mau Uprising of violent conflict exacerbated by white landownership and reluctance to concede majority rule.

The British introduction of this parasitic model of human and environmental interactions was to create a colonial legacy of dependency, degradation, and impoverishment that was to prove disastrous for the East African geography throughout the colonial period and the modern era.
The most important philosophical foundations shaping British involvement in East Africa are contained within the male-dominant, Judeo-Christian traditions and the emerging capitalist ethical and socioeconomic frameworks embraced centrally as ideological and social models at the turn of the century in Western Europe and by the British in particular.
These philosophical foundations were extremely important in determining the dominating and exploitative agendas of British colonization in East Africa, and the ways in which the sustainable strategies of traditional societies and indigenous cultural groups in East Africa were disrupted and disregarded in favor of the increasingly destructive and oppressive tendencies of the British colonial framework.

In order that we might gain a better understanding of the style and design that emerged from this British Colonial time period, it is imperative for us to examine the historical and political context that brought forth this exotic and often regal form of fashion and design.
The establishment of the empire resulted primarily from commercial and political motives and emigration movements; its long endurance resulted from British command of the seas and preeminence in international commerce, and from the flexibility of British rule.
British Colonial style from this time period evokes the romance of late 19th century Imperialism when the British colonies dominated parts of India, China, and the South Seas.
