	British embossed postage stamps - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The dies used for this type of printing have the embossed, (raised), portions of the stamp design cut away, (recessed), into the metal.
		Prior to the introduction of the tinted gum, it was colourless.
		The presses used for the embosses dies, allowed for only one stamp to be printed at a time.

		As this was the first postage stamp, the country name is omitted, a tradition continued with all the stamps of Great Britain, the identifying characteristic is the monarch's head which always faces to the left on definitive stamps.
		Stamps overprinted with 'specimen' were sent to postmasters as examples of issued stamps, these are available on the market at a fraction of the cost of mint examples.
		The first surface-printed stamp was the 4d in 1855, this was followed by the 6d and 1s in 1856, the first surface printed 10d was not issued until 1867.

	Security Embossed Postage Stamps
		However, a lesser known security measure is embossing which was perhaps the first form of private security endorsement ever to be used on postage stamps.
		As a process in itself, embossing was widely used, for example in tying fiscal stamps to documents and the personalisation of postal stationary.
		The stamp is embossed with a design enclosing the letters J.B and Co. The same design was impressed into the wax seal used to seal the letter.
