Popular Culture: from Baseball to Rock and Roll (John Bull and Uncle Sam)
Although the dominance of American rock and roll music was the most conspicuous feature of the British pop culture scene in the years after World War II, the long tradition of British performers thriving in the United States continued both before and after war as did the favorable reception of their American counterparts in Britain.
British performers continued to be popular in American beyond the 1960s.
In the 1950s British rock groups tended to imitate American groups and re-record their most popular songs, a trend that was in some instances reversed in the 1960s, when American groups copied British songs, especially those by the Beatles.

CD Baby: BRITISH INVASION ALL-STARS: British Invasion All-Stars   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
In rock circles, the term British Invasion is used to describe the wave of British rock bands that made its presence felt in the '60s.
Rock was born in the United States, but when the Beatles and many other British acts hit big in the '60s, it was clear that England had become a major player in the rock & roll field.
The British Invasion All-Stars' self-titled debut album, which was released on the independent Mooreland Street label in 2002, shows no awareness of the alternative rock sounds of the early 2000s; the band is totally unaffected by any of the punk, new wave, post-punk, pop-metal, or alternative rock that came after the '60s.

While Oasis deviated from the trad rock formula, there were legions of bands that used their devotion to classic rock as reason to shamelessly replicate '60s rock.
Just as importantly, many observers, while occasionally criticizing the trad rock nature of his music, acknowledged that Weller was one of the few rock veterans who had managed to stay vital within the second decade of his career.
Their self-released debut EP, All I Wanna Do Is Rock, came out in the fall of that year; with its earnest vocals and soaring guitars, it captured the spirit of British rock at the time, which was retreating from some of Brit-pop's artiness to a back-to-basics sound.

'GREATEST HITS' HELP TO CLARIFY BRITISH ROCK - New York Times
In fact, the similarities between the old and the new British rock run deeper than a simple abandonment of recent punk rigor.
For instance, the battle between rock and disco of the past few years seems pretty scholastic to someone who hears in both a similar, fl-inspired, bass heavy, common-time dance beat.
In any case, four turn-of-the-year 'greatest hits' albums by four leading British pre-punk rock artists have come along to clarify our notions of just what older British rock is about, and what it shares and does not share with the country's rock music of the past five years.
