| | Drug Helps "brittle Bone Disease" |
 | | NEW YORK, Oct 05 (Reuters) -- The drug pamidronate, used to treat osteoporosis, can also reduce the frequency of fractures and improve symptoms in children with osteogenesis imperfecta, or "brittle bone disease," Canadian researchers report in the October 1st issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. |
 | | Over the course of the study, the researchers found that the children had less bone loss, and on average, a 42% increase in bone mineral density each year, as confirmed by x-ray studies and other clinical and biochemical tests. |
 | | Other scientists are currently investigating the possibility of treating osteogenesis imperfecta with gene therapy, Dr. Joan C. Marini of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, writes in an accompanying editorial. |
