The third largest city in the province, Brixen (Bressanone) is an old (founded 901) town, the artistical and cultural capital of the valley of the Eisack (Isarco) river.
The first mention of Brixen dates to 901 in a document issued by the King of Germany Louis III the Child: in it, a territory called Maso Prihsna is assigned to the bishop of Sabiona, Zacharia.
In 1039 the Bishop of Brixen, Pappo, was elevated to Pope by emperor Henry III.

We are currently mapping the Quaternary outcrops in the Brixen Basin, studying its sedimentary inventory and applying luminescence dating techniques to explore the history of the basin fill.

The bishopric of Brixen (modern Brixen-Bressanone, in what is now the autonomous province of Bolzano) is a former independent state of Northern Italy which was created in 1179 and existed until 1803, when it was absorbed into the Habsburg's Holy Roman Empire.

Particularly notorious is the case of Altwin, during whose episcopate (1049-1091) the ill-famed synod of 1080 was held in Brixen, at which thirty bishops, partisans of the emperor, declared Pope Gregory VII deposed, and set up as antipope the Bishop of Ravenna, with the name of Clement III.

Spent christmas 2005 in brixen, staying at hotel brixnerwirt, its a farly priced hotel, the food was not the best and the room pretty basic, but the staff were very pleasant.
Brixen in a small place and has no real heart, its just a main road running through it.
Overall I would say brixen was OK, I would go to that region again, but stay in a different resort.
