Brixham is a small town in the county of Devon in the southwest of England.
Brixham is famous for being the landing spot of William III of Orange with his Dutch army on November 5, 1688 during the Glorious Revolution, and many local people still have Dutch surnames, being direct descendants of soldiers in that army.
Brixham is also famous for being the town where the fishing trawler was invented.These elegant wooden boats were invented in Brixham in the 19th century, and copied all over the world, influencing fishing fleets everywhere.

 Brixham Harbour
Brixham Harbour is located on the southern aspect of Tor Bay and boasts one of the largest fishing fleets in the UK, plus a thriving fish market to support it.
Approached from the sea the view of Brixham with its many colourful houses cascading down on either side of the harbour is one of the prettiest along the South Devon coast.
There is currently a huge regeneration project being considered for the future of the town and harbour, involving the possibility of a northern arm breakwater, development of reclaimed land, revitilising the central area and a review of the transport system.

Brixham is a very old and historic town.
On another occasion when there was a cholera epidemic, some Brixham smugglers drove their cargo up from the beach in a hearse, accompanied by a bevy of supposed mourners following the cortege drawn by horses.
The story is that a father told his daughter’s suitor that he would rather see her in her coffin than married to him, so the lad took up the challenge and built a house shaped like a coffin for himself and his bride.

The batteries also had the capacity to fire upon enemy ships out in the bay, although there was never a need for this during their service.

Brixham stands on the shores of a fine natural harbour, which is home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the UK, and is sheltered from the prevailing south-westerly winds by Berry Head.
It is particularly associated, however, with the landing of William of Orange in 1688, later to become King William III and also the anchoring in Torbay, in 1815, of HMS Bellerophon, with Napoleon on board, prior to his exile on St Helena.
It was a combination of the peace of this beautiful house, its grounds and superb views across Torbay that inspired this famous poet and hymn-writer, in 1847, the year of his death, to write that loveliest of all hymns "Abide With Me".

The Brixham Heritage Race has it's roots in the Sailing Trawler races that have been held in Torbay since 1851.
In 1914, King George V presented the perpetual challenge trophy known as the 'Kings Cup', to be raced for by Brixham registered sailing trawlers over 40 tons..
The event is organised voluntarily by the sailors who run the Brixham based boats, and we aim to provide what sailors want - good sailing, good competition, good fun and good craic.
