Brize Norton is the largest RAF Station in the UK.
Brize was opened in 1937, fought a bombing war from '39 to '45and was used to train airborne forces, before being handed over to the USAF in 1950.
Of course, Brize Norton pre-dates the RAF station.

The Squadrons from Brize Norton continued to operate throughout D-Day, towing airborne forces in gliders to many landing zones in France, and were involved in the operation to capture the coastal battery at Merville.
Those events were recalled recently when Mr Timothy Horn, the son of the Station Commander of Brize Norton in 1944, visited the unit.
It is perhaps interesting to reflect that Squadrons from RAF Brize Norton were operating in the early hours of D-Day, and since that time the Unit has been involved in supporting the UK Armed Forces in every major conflict.

Brize Norton was officially handed over to the USAF on 16 April 1951, but it was not until the following year that the first SAC aircraft arrived.
In September 1953 the first B-47E Stratojet 6-engined bombers of the 305th BW deployed to Brize Norton from Limestone (Loring) AFB in Maine.
On 1 April 1965 the RAF took back control of Brize Norton, which was to become a Transport Command base.

A.T.C. travelled to RAF Brize Norton to fly in a VC10 transporter-tanker.We left Cowbridge at 0500hrs and arrived at RAF Brize Norton by 0730hrs.
In addition, it was a weird experience looking down on what appeared as minute North Sea oil rigs from 15-20,000 ft. Before returning to Brize Norton, we participated in another air to air refuelling exercise.
RAF Brize Norton is the RAF airport for the UK.and whilst we were there, we met several troops who were awaiting flights to bases such as, Cyprus and Gibraltar.
