Broad, a Pulitzer Prize-winning science writer for the New York Times, offers an excellent personal overview of current explorations.
After a brief history of deep-sea exploration before 1900, the book is set firmly in the 20th century, concentrating on the ships, subs, divers, underwater vehicles both manned and robotic, and satellites used in a variety of applications, from discovering the Titanic to observing unusual or new marine species.
But Broad does an excellent job of telling a story from beginning to end with each chapter being a self contained story of man's exploration into the deep.

This broad set of goals has carried him into many realms of research: stellar evolution; age dating of the stars and the universe; quasars; galaxy classification; galaxy formation and evolution; pulsating variable stars; and methods of correcting for observational selection bias.
His important contributions to astronomy and cosmology have led to various honorary degrees from Yale University, University of Illinois, University of Chicago, University of Southern California, Miami University (Ohio), Graceland College, and the University of Chile.

Murphy has speculated that the universe’s broad intention is to bring forth through mammalian, human, and super-human evolution a richer and more intricately embodied experience of Spirit Itself.
With these broad ideas in mind, Poletti suggested that his theory about reincarnation fits well with the same larger intent of the universe that Murphy has spotted: to bring forth ever-more complex gross forms that can embody more of the depth, richness, sophistication, and subtlety of Spirit.
