Topic: Broad nosed Gentle Lemur

  Broad-nosed Gentle Lemur (Hapalemur simus)
The broad-nosed gentle lemur is found on the island of Madagascar in bamboo forests, in a small area of southeastern Madagascar.
The bamboo consumed by the broad-nosed gentle lemur was found to be high in fiber and low in protein (Wright and Randrimanantena, 1989; Leclercq and Santini-Palka, 1995); this species has a high amount of cellulose and lignin in the diet (Leclercq and Santini-Palka, 1995).
The broad-nosed gentle lemur is a crepuscular species (Klopfer and Boskoff, 1979).

 Lemurs of Madagascar
Lemurs belong to the sub-order Strepsirhini together with bushbabies, lorises, and pottos which—like the original lemurs—are nocturnal, insectivorous primates characterized by a small body, a long nose, and large eyes.
Lemurs are vocal animals, making sounds that range from the grunts and swears of brown lemurs and sifaka to the chirps of mouse lemurs to the eerie, wailing call of the indri, which has been likened to a cross between a police siren and the song of a humpback whale.
The newly described lemurs are all mouse lemurs, one of the world's smallest primates.

In captivity their manners are gentle, although their activity is surprising; especially remarkable are the enormous distances they can swing themselves by their long arms.
In spite of this length of arm, which seems to render their bodily proportions so unlike those of man, the length of leg when compared with the length of the trunk of the body, is more human than in either of the two preceding genera.
The spider monkeys are very gentle in disposition, and, by this and by their long limbs and special fitness for tree-life, seem to represent in an analogous manner in the New World the gibbons of the Old.

Lemurs are often lumped in with other somewhat less advanced primates known collectively as "prosimians." Other animals sometimes referred to as prosimians include tarsiers, lorises, bushbabies, galagos, pottos, and so forth.
If you meet a lemur, and the lemur sneaks up behind you and takes a swipe at you with well sharpened fingernails, odds are you've spotted a Gentle Lemur; Gentle Lemurs have been seething for generations over being stuck with such a silly designation and are out to prove that they are anything but gentle.
If the lemur does not attack, but instead sits down and chews on a nice clump of cyanide-laden bamboo leaves, you're seeing another interesting quality of the bamboo lemurs: bamboo lemurs can ingest cyanide in quantities that would kill primates several times their size.

But because a lemur's fingers are not flexible enough to groom, it uses the two grooming instruments found on most prosimians: the dental comb, made up of lower 6 teeth (incisors and canine) that stick away from the jaw; and the "toilet claw" and enlarged nail on the second toe.
