Broadband - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Broadband in telecommunications is a term which refers to a signaling method which includes or handles a relatively wide range of frequencies which may be divided into channels or frequency bins.
Broadband in data communications may have the same meaning as above, so that data transmission over a fibre optic cable would be referred to as broadband as compared to a telephone modem operating at 600 bits per second.
However, broadband in data communications is frequently used in a more technical sense to refer to data transmission where multiple pieces of data are sent simultaneously to increase the effective rate of transmission, regardless of actual data rate.

Broadband Networks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A multi-media network has to support a broad range of bit-rates demanded by connections, not only because there are many communication media, but also because a communication medium may be encoded by algorithms with different bit-rates.
Television networks using the radio or the cable medium are largely broadcast networks with minimum switching facilities [2][3].
The different types of traffic found in a broadband network (with examples) and their respective requirements are summarized in Table 1.

It means that the data transmission is wireless and that the stations are fixed, unlike in mobile, where the stations could be moving (assuming that a station is a subscriber).
Thus the recent wireless broadband networks have the ability to offer a wide range of one-way and two-way voice, data, and video service transmission capabilities with a capacity many times larger than any current wireless or nonwireless service.
In using the wireless broadband signal, there are various issues that need to be discussed, one important one being the spectrum that can be used.

Municipally Owned Broadband Networks: A Critical Evaluation - by Joseph L. Bast - The Heartland Institute
Not all of these broadband services are as fast or reliable as the fiber-optic network envisioned by advocates of a municipally owned broadband network, and some may cost more than a typical small business owner wants to spend.
Generally speaking, municipal ownership of broadband networks is probably not in the best interests of residents and most businesses, even in communities not well served today by private service providers.
The chief advantage of a municipal broadband network is that it would speed up access to high-quality broadband services by six months or a year and subsidize this access for the small number of businesses and individuals who most want it.

One city official says she fears that if the “broadband highway” passes her city by, just as the interstate highway system passed many by in the 1950s, her city might become a backwater.
So the idea of owning broadband networks often is couched by city officials as a means to “economic development,” a way to attract more taxpaying residents and businesses to the area.
The greatest interest in advancing broadband projects is usually found in rural and suburban cities whose residents don’t have affordable access to broadband service.
