Broadband Internet access - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Broadband Internet access became a rapidly developing market in many areas in the early 2000s; one study found that broadband Internet usage in the United States grew from 6% in June 2000 to over 30% in 2003.
The FCC definition of broadband is 200 kbit/s (0.2 Mbit/s) in one direction, and advanced broadband is at least 200 kbit/s in both directions.
The OECD has defined broadband as 256 kbit/s in at least one direction and this bit rate is the most common baseline that is marketed as "broadband" around the world.

Radio is free plus the equipment costs are as little as $100 for HF equipment while SAT phones are about $750 for one handheld.
If one wants to say that amateur radio (and other services) must be subordinated to the public interest of increased highspeed internet, that is a defensible position (again, "defensible" in the sense that one can make it with a clear conscience and belief in a higher good, not that it's "correct").
Alot less than the amateur radio operators who have been on the wireless frequencies since the turn of the century, and when all else fails during an emergency the hams always come through.

USATODAY.com - Net over power lines irks amateur radio lovers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-30)
Broadband over power line, or BPL, is in danger of becoming an also-ran in the race to bring broadband Internet to the American home, even as it's overcoming some technical hurdles.
BPL hasn't lived up to its early promise as a rural broadband alternative, either, because of a technical quirk that is also the source of the ham radio frustrations.
For broadband, a radio-frequency signal is applied to the power line, much like a high-frequency signal is applied to phone lines to create a digital subscriber line, or DSL.

BT to extend radio broadband effort | Internet Marketing News and Blog | E-consultancy.com
"Radio broadband will be vital for connecting some of the 573 smallest exchanges which do not have a trigger level, or challenging areas more than 6km from their exchange," the company said in a statement.
Unlike traditional broadband that requires exchanges to be enabled, radio broadband uses BT's Radio Broadband signals, which are transmitted to a PC via a low-power antenna.
Although the move is part of BT's commitment to deliver 100% broadband coverage by 2005, critics argue that radio broadband could scupper plans made by rival wireless broadband firms to deliver an ADSL service to rural areas.

The ARRL--The National Association for Amateur Radio-- is supportive of broadband access for all Americans; however, it opposes BPL as a way to achieve this goal because of its high potential for causing interference to radiocommunication.

 Satellite Radio Irks Broadband Companies
April 08, 2002 (Computerworld) While satellite radio operators are complaining about Wi-Fi and Bluetooth systems, several wireless broadband service providers last month filed claims with the FCC charging that their networks are being interfered with by the radio systems, particularly those run by XM Satellite Radio.
The broadband suppliers told the FCC that terrestrial repeaters operated by the satellite radio companies will cause "devastating" interference to their own operations within the 2.3-GHz band.
XM Satellite operates about 900 terrestrial repeaters, while Sirius Satellite Radio currently has about 100 of the devices, which are designed to fill coverage gaps in their services within U.S. cities.

xMax, the latest innovation in broadband communications, is a very quiet radio system that uses radio channels already filled up with noisy pager or TV signals, said inventor Joe Bobier.
The technology could interest a telecoms or Internet operator with no radio spectrum because it can begin a wireless broadband service with very few base stations and add more stations and increase density as demand rises.
Radio chips for devices should be in the $5-$6 range when built in volume while base stations will be around $350,000.

Regulatory rules that are described in such files are interpreted by spectrum-agile radios, and, upon changes, the radio devices reconfigure their way of operation to adapt to the new regulatory environment.
