DVD Times: Region 1 Reviews: Broadcast News
Broadcast News is a hugely enjoyable comedy that pretends to be a serious satirical comment on the declining quality of TV News programmes in America.
The film is made with the unobtrusive efficiency of the best TV sitcoms, which is unsurprising since James L. Brooks was involved with some of the classic American half hour comedies, including the legendary "Taxi".
Broadcast News has aged very well, and is one of the few examples of a comedy which is made by, and for, adults as opposed to overgrown adolescents.

Broadcast News is a 1987 romantic comedy about a brilliant yet prickly reporter (Albert Brooks), his charming but admittedly far less seasoned rival (William Hurt), and their virtuoso producer (Holly Hunter), who has daily emotional breakdowns.

Longtime CBS Evening News producer Susan Zirinsky was a technical advisor on the film.

 News Network
Both networks began broadcast news by focusing on events, matters of public concern such as political conventions, election results and presidential inaugurations, and from this earliest period, broadcast journalism was rooted in various forms of competition.
In this developmental period the growth of network television news was hindered by the decision of the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) to "freeze" new TV licenses between 1948 and 1952, until it could sort out channel allocations and decide on a standard for color TV.
Film was still the medium used to acquire pictures, but once developed, the film could be relayed by fast aircraft to the nearest television cable terminus to be fed to the network.

 'Broadcast News'
The film is about the private lives of the men and women in front of and behind the cameras at a network news bureau in Washington, and it gives us the exhilarating feeling that in getting to peek backstage, we're being let in on big secrets, that the tricks of the trade are being revealed.
As it turns out, big secrets aren't revealed in "Broadcast News," but the film is so ingratiatingly high-spirited, and the performances so full of sass and vigor, that in the long run it doesn't really matter much.
This is the glamor of network news, as Brooks presents it, and the behind-the-scenes material that he shows us here is enormously rich and enthralling.

Some segments can be filmed in the classroom, but for shooting outside the classroom, try to get extra help from a teachers aid or a parent volunteer.
You will find that students will reach a point where they are all ready to film but, because of supply limitations, have nothing to do but wait until their turn for the camera.

Broadcast News -- News producer (Holly Hunter) in the Washington bureau of a TV network finds herself drawn away from a hard-working reporter whom she admires (Albert Brooks) by an off-again, on-again attraction to a handsome but unprofessional reporter (William Hurt) being groomed as network news anchor.
Written, produced and directed by James L. Brooks, the romantic comedy is often quite funny and also worthwhile in its satric portrait of television news being more concerned with image and packaging than with the news story itself.
