 History of Broadmeadows line
These two lines are closest to the old brick wall at Kensington next to grass that formally was two goods lines which was ripped up in the early 80’s.
Dormant for many years with the exception of the Royal Melbourne Show week and Races, the line sprang back into daily use in the late 90’s when Hillside (now Connex) began using the racecourse stations' large platforms and 4 tracks for off peak cleaning and servicing etc, but trains are not left stabled overnight.
The Broadmeadows line connects with 2 tram lines and countless bus routes and is a vital link in the North West transport system.

Green Left - Rail line closure for freeway construction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
MELBOURNE -- Victoria's new transport minister, Robin Cooper, caused outrage in the northern suburbs on February 4, when he announced that the Upfield line, long a battleground between the authorities and residents, would close for six months to allow construction of the City Link freeway project.
Under the government's plan, the line would be closed between Flemington Bridge and North Melbourne stations, with buses ferrying people to Newmarket station, on the Broadmeadows line.
Community groups have expressed opposition to the plan, not least because other lines have remained open during similar works, including the nearby Broadmeadows line while a bridge was built over it for the Western Ring Road on Melbourne's outskirts.

The Broadmeadows Railway Line   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Today, the Broadmeadows line is a busy Suburban line, but in the early days, when the line terminated at Essendon, freight services were provided to most of these current stations, as they were semi-rural farming locations, rather than suburbs like today.
As the line became more and more busy, a Freight line linking Broadmeadows and Albion was constructed, to bypass the line, and to provide access to the Western rail yards, and later a standard gauge rail link to Sydney.
With the lines configured as they are, this means that trains have to reverse to run via the BMS line, so it is far to difficult to do so.

With the outbreak of World War I, the land near the road between Sydney Road and the train station in Broadmeadows changed from grazing land for local graziers to military use.
Today the site remains an active military camp with a focus on recruitment and training, particularly of the reserves, but recent downsizing means there is too much surplus land—and I guess therefore the government's desire or decision to sell it.
