Broadstairs on the coast, near the North Foreland, has risen into notice as a watering-place: it is in Ringslow or Thanet hundred, in St. Augustine lathe.
A small pier for the protection of the fishing craft was anciently built here, and the passage down the cliff to the sea was defended by an arch, gates, and portcullis ; the arch still remains.
There are many good houses at Broadstairs, with libraries, warm baths, and other accommodations.

Obviously, not as old as some of its surroundings, it has some older features such as curtains that are still opened on chains and the whole establishment is family run.
Broadstairs was originally known as Bradstowe and a broad lane down to the seashore is said to have been defended by a portcullis as was Kingsgate just around the coast.

Charles Dickens visited Broadstairs regularly from 1837 until 1859 and immortalised the town as "Our English Watering Place".
In 1937, to commemorate the centenary of the author's first visit, Gladys Waterer, the then owner of Dickens House, conceived the idea of putting on a production of David Copperfield and of having people about the town in Victorian dress to publicise it.
Follow in Charles Dickens' footsteps by coming to Broadstairs, which he visited between 1837 and 1859.

There are a number of bays in and around Broadstairs, all of which are sandy and reasonably safe for children, although only Botany, Joss and Viking Bays have lifeguards.
