  Type 22 (Broadsword Class) Frigate
With the priority given to the Type 42, the Type 21 was brought in as a stopgap measure, and work on the Type 22 proceeded slowly.
The first of class (HMS Broadsword) was eventually laid down in February 1975, with the others proceeding at yearly intervals.
However, the Falklands conflict saw Brilliant and Broadsword assigned as close escorts to the carriers Hermes and Invincible.

The word Frigate probably has it's origins from the Mediterranean where it is pronounced "Fregata" and may be a corruption of "Fabricata" (construction), "Fr" (preface to indicate a vessel) and "pakros" (unguarded), it was used to identify flush deck oared galleys.
The name Frigate died out largely in the age of iron and steam and was replaced with "Cruiser." It was not until WWII that the class name was revived to describe a long range Escort vessel.

The main mission of Horizon frigates is to provide air-defence escort for a carrier battle group led by a Charles de Gaulle type aircraft carrier, or for a group of unarmed or lightly-armed ships, such as an amphibious or a mine-hunting force.
The one criticism of the class was that they seemed under-armed for their size and cost, and so the Exocet missile system was installed on all ships after the first three, and those would be fitted with it at there mid-life refits (although Antelope was sunk during the Falklands conflict).
The Type 22 frigates are among the most successful warships built for the Royal Navy since 1945, but there continued evolution has led to a ship that is probably closer to a cruiser or destroyer (in terms of capability and cost) than a simple frigate, particularly in their weapons fit.
