Consider this: without the electoral college, we could concievably have a president decided by fewer than 30 cities, which is almost as bad as if not worse than having an election decided by a couple of states.
We need to separate electors out to districts instead of states, with the states represented by two Senatorial electors (or "at-large" electors) and each district represented by their House seat.
Since House districts are drawn up by State Legislatures the districts tend to be either conservatively or liberally biased, depending on which party controls the legislature.

Reform of the electoral system appears to be garnering increased attention in Canada for a variety of reasons, including pressure to correct the ongoing gender imbalance in elected positions.
While the major impetus for reviewing the electoral systems in these provinces has been to ensure that a party’s representation in the legislature more closely reflects the percentage of votes it receives, a secondary goal in some provinces has been to redress the gender imbalance in the legislature.
Based on extensive consultation on electoral reform, it concluded that “increased representation of women is an important reason for reforming Canada’s first-past-the-post voting system,”(24) and recommended that Canada adopt a mixed member proportional electoral system.
