The Broadway Bridge, a lift type, is located between West 220th Street in Manhattan and West 225th Street in the Bronx.
The first bridge at this approximate site, a then-shallow spot where the waters of the Harlem River and Spuyten Duyvil Creek joined, was built in 1693 and was known as the "Kings Bridge," as everyone except soldiers and other representatives of the king had to pay tolls to use it.
The Free Bridge was built of dry rubble and wooden beams, and was destroyed by the British when they routed Washington's troops from New York in 1776; it was rebuilt shortly after the war.

 Broadway Bridge (US 9)
The new bridge, which opened on January 1, 1895, was a single-deck steel swing span that imitated the design of the Madison Avenue Bridge.
The New York City Department of Bridges determined that the existing structure would not be able to handle an extension of the IRT subway along the bridge, and ordered design work to begin on a replacement span.
Designed as a dual-deck steel swing span, the 1,600-ton bridge had a 266-foot-long swing span that accommodated a 35-foot-wide roadway and two sidewalks on its lower deck, and three subway tracks (carried within three sets of dual beams) on its upper deck.

When the subway was constructed, it was found that this bridge would not be strong enough to carry the increased burden, and a clever engineering scheme was devised to remove the old bridge and replace it with one suited to the increased prospective weight.
The new bridge was constructed on floats and taken to the canal; then large flatboats were placed under the old bridge, and as the tide rose it lifted the floats and the bridge with them.
The free bridge was opened with a barbecue and great rejoicings on the first of January, 1759; and the ancient toll bridge was soon forced to become a free bridge, also.
