Talent Pool 21 - Jim Shooter (June 2000)
The lore of comics - and by this I mean stories not just in the books themselves, but also tales about the people who make them appear on the shelves - includes a number of heroes, a number of hacks, and the occasional villain.
The epithet "Nixon of Comics" sometimes attaches to him, reflecting the kind of dislike Shooter enjoys among a broad segment of comics fandom.
For whatever shortcomings Valiant Comics had, though, it enjoyed a number of eminent talents (including the likes of Barry Windsor-Smith) and still, even in its aftermath, retains a considerable loyalty among the die-hard fans it created in its days as one of the "Big Four" comics publishers.

 Broadway Comics
Broadway Comic didn't have the infrastructure or the means to continue.
The Broadway continuity was, like Shooter's two previous attempts, taking place in real time and the characters were most likely not to wear a super-hero uniform.
One of the interesting things Shooter did at Broadway Comics was the comic-within-a comic called "Blood S.C.R.E.A.M." as a part of the story in "Shadow State".

 Broadway Comic Press Release
Separately, the company also said it has reorganized Broadway Comics, which became part of Golden Books with its recent acquisition of the family entertainment library of Broadway Video Entertainment, L.P. Golden Books will now focus on leveraging existing characters in Golden Books' library, which includes the dormant properties of Gold Key Comics.
Gold Key Comics, which had been among the world's leading comic book publishers, owns the copyrights for such characters as Turok, an action hero that will be featured in an upcoming Nintendo game.
Comics will now be treated as a 'book' commodity and the 'Golden Book' is clearly in charge.

He was trained on the job as a creator, editor and manager of creative organizations by chief editor and executive VP Mort Weisinger, who was responsible not only for the success of the comics, but also for the development of Superman, Batman and other properties for film, television and licensing.
Shooter was a key figure in the creative and marketing effort that, over the course of several years, turned it around and established Marvel as the dominant leader of a revitalized industry.
The intellectual properties of EEP, LP and Broadway Comics were eventually acquired by Golden Books Family Entertainment in 1996 as part of their $95 million acquisition of Broadway Entertainment, LP.

In fact, one of the first Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art exhibitions that I saw was devoted to Tarzan's history in the comics.
Among the important comics artists who have worked on the character are Hal Foster and Burne Hogarth on the Tarzan comic strip, Joe Kubert at DC Comics, and John Buscema at Marvel.
Perhaps the makers of the Broadway version felt this was too gruesome an end to present to family audiences on stage, so their Clayton simply gets locked in the brig.

 Shooter, Jim
Shooter began selling stories to DC Comics for their Legion of Super-Heroes title when he was only 13.
Shooter was often blamed, sometimes demonized, by the comics fan press for corporate decisions his position required him to defend, most notably in Marvel's long-running disputes with Jack Kirby over creator's rights and the return of his original artwork from 1960s comics.
With the new company enjoying great success in the direct sales comics market, Shooter was ousted in a corporate dispute sparked by his venture capitalist partners' desire to sell off the company and realize their profits.

When FATALE was done, I pretty much quit Broadway that day - which didn't much matter, because they were out of business the next week - and I ran into Tony.
And, eventually, I was, like, "Well, hell, doing this comic book thing has got to be more fun!", and it was about the same time I decided I was not going to make a career as a painter.

But, with the original comic art I own, I feel like I'm holding in my hands a Rembrandt or a Picasso even if it's only Kirby, Starlin or Infantino (and I say "even if it's only" in a sarcastic way, because, to me, those are classic illustrators, too).

It's got to happen one of these days and when it does, people who thought art was overpriced will wish they'd paid the small prices for comic art today so they could reap the rewards tomorrow.

Gold also discussed the joys of returning to single life – after 20 years in a relationship and two children, and drew laughs recounting the prickly experience of being interviewed with her mother on a Nightline segment about when people knew they were lesbian or gay.
