Talent agent "Broadway" Danny Rose (Allen) represents countless incompetent entertainers and one talented one: washed-up lounge singer Lou Canova (Nick Apollo Forte), whose career is on the rebound.
At the singer's insistence, Danny Rose masquerades as Farrow's boyfriend to divert attention from the affair.
However, Rose is unaware that she is also dating the gangster; this forces Allen and Farrow to flee from the Mafia and lands them in a number of comical situations.

One of the reasons that this film is so charming is that even though Danny Rose is a loser, he's a good-hearted loser with an admirable philosophy of life, despite the fact that he's continually abused and/or given the short shrift by those he helps.

As remembered by the veteran comics convening at The Carnegie Deli, talent agent Danny Rose (Woody Allen) was one of the good ones.
Canova was this aging Italian crooner, a complete has-been, a total boozer, but Danny coddled him and preened him, and after years of dedication it looked like it was finally going to pay off when there was a sudden wave of nostalgic interest in the singers of the Golden Age.
Parts of Danny are uneven, particularly in transition from madcap caper to its serious turn at the end, but the material is still very fresh and involving, and Danny's huckster mannerisms give Allen a different spin off which to play his usual neuroses.

This throwback to Woodman classic has Allen starring as Danny Rose, a two-bit theatrical agent in Manhattan, representing the bottom of the barrel -- including a one-armed juggler and the '50s-style crooner Lou Canova (Nick Apollo Forte in his first and only film appearance to date).

Not only does Danny ("I'm just the beard!") have to contend with the duplicity with Lou's wife, but he also becomes intertwined in a mob mess, culminating in a high-pitched shootout amongst helium balloons.
