Broca's area - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Broca's area is the section of the human brain (in the opercular and triangular sections of the inferior frontal gyrus of the frontal lobe of the cortex) that is involved in language processing, speech production and comprehension.
Broca's and Wernicke's areas are found unilaterally in the brain, most commonly on the left side, due to the majority of the population being "Left dominant".
Broca's area is named after Pierre Paul Broca, who first described it in 1861, after conducting a post mortem study on a speech-impaired patient.

 Brocas area
There are two main parts of Broca's area with different roles during language comprehension and production.
The former is thought to support the interpretation of various 'modes' of stimuli (plurimodal association) and the programming of verbal conducts.
People suffering from damage to this area may show a condition called Broca's aphasia (sometimes known as expressive aphasia, motor aphasia, or nonfluent aphasia) which makes them unable to understand or create grammatically complex sentences: their speech will contain almost nothing but content words.

Beyond Wernike's area into the region that surrounds the lateral fissure, near the junction of the temporal, occipital, and parietal lobes (the "posterior language area") is also involved in language comprehension (Carlson 486).
Warnike's area is stimulated and the memories that constitute the meaning of the word are activated though the posterior language area, which connects Wernike's to the neural circuit which contain these memories (Carlson 487).
Speech comprehension happens in the Wernickes area which is "in the middle and posterior to the superior temporal gyur of the left hemisphere.

The essential role of Brocas area in imitation.
The posterior sector of Brocas area (Brodmann area 44), a brain region critical for language, may have evolved from neurons active during observation and execution of manual movements.
To test whether Broca's area is essential to imitation, we used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), which is known to transiently disrupt functions in stimulated areas.
This suggests that Broca's area is a premotor region essential to finger movement imitation.

Even though they came into existence at around the same time and place (1982, the Bay Area) as the speed metal movement, San Francisco originals Brocas Helm shared only a few thrash-like tendencies with neighbors Exodus, Metallica, et al.
Fact is, band and label were separated by too great a distance to work together effectively, and the demos that would become Brocas Helm's, second album, Black Death, would languish unreleased for nearly four years before finally coming to light in 1989 -- and then via the band's own Gargoyle imprint.
Brocas Helm's retirement was short-lived, however, and when Greek promoters invited them to tour that metal-mad country, they eagerly reformed and issued a single entitled "Blood machine" to coincide with their live dates.

Patterns of sign errors accompanying electrical stimulation of Broca's area and the supramarginal gyrus (SMG) are reported.
Our findings show Broca's area to be involved in the motor execution of sign language.
These data demonstrate that the linguistic specificity of Broca's area is not limited to speech behavior.

For more than a century, it has been claimed that lesions to the left frontal lobe (i.e., "Brocas area") produce linguistic deficits that are characteristically described as "nonfluent", ranging from no language output to truncated, agrammatical phrases.
Specifically, we have argued that Broca's area subserves the ability to select between competing alternatives.
I will review the evidence that Broca's area is not specialized for semantic processing (as has been argued elsewhere) but rather is necessary for selection.

Damage to an area of the brain named after it's dicoverer Brocas area, causes a deformatioon in speech known as Broca's aphasia.
In Broca's aphasia patients tend to have a slow non-fluent speech.
Damage to this area causes Weirnecke's aphasia which is defined as a difficulty in understanding speech and also produces meaningless speech. The speech of a patient with Weirneckes aphasia appears to have fluent speech but most of his speech is comprised of nonsense words.
