  Brock Yates
Brock Yates invented the Cannonball Run, which, before it became a silly movie, was an actual and very illegal high-speed road race across America's highways.
Smokey and the Bandit was obviously Yates-inspired, and Yates co-wrote Smokey and the Bandit II.
Yates on Nader: "With a demagogue like Nader -- and make no mistake about it, Ralph Nader is a classic demagogue -- it is critical that he be surrounded by conspiracies, that every act of foolishness and incompetence be interpreted as a finely woven pattern of vicious deceit.

 The Infamous Brock Yates Memo
Yates takes aim at two groups: the environmentalists who think that cycling is necessary to save the Earth and the transportation reformers who think that cycling is necessary to save society.
Yates criticizes the National Bicycling and Walking Study as a one-million-dollar "abuse of good sense" to discover the amazing fact that few Americans commute by bicycle because they are afraid, find cyclocommuting inconvenient, can't change clothes, etc. Yates tells us that modern cities have been designed for automobile transportation.
Yates criticizes the ISTEA plans for bike paths and other cycling amenities, and cogently argues that these plans and theories make cycling a "machine of socialist utility embodying all the joie de vivre of a wheelbarrow." The trouble is that in these matters Yates is right.

The Hot Rod:Resurrection of a Legend - by Brock Yates
Yates campaigned the car in vintage sports car races, and soon the Eliminator was once again beating Ferraris and Porsches on U.S. road courses.
The car inspired Yates to build a modern interpretation of the concept, and he took one of the most potent engines available-a Viper V-10-and mounted it in a hot rod chassis with a road-racing-inspired suspension.

Brock Yates in C&D - 10 Tenths Motorsport
Yates, propping up his obvious agenda by slagging off CART, and now not being able to comprehend that the IRL is a carbon copy of CART from 1995 but only turning left.
Yates pulled his head out of the dark place he keeps it, or just clipped his unruly eyebrows, he could see that he has been wrong and neither CART or the IRL has the answer right now.
I think what Brock wants is what NASCAR has in their road races - specialists who come in and look good for a while, before weird officialing, bad strategy and weak equipment relegates them to the back, allowing the regulars to win and claim that their assertion about being the best drivers is valid.

Let’s hope Brock steps up to the plate there at C/D soon enough to give us some insights into what the deal is with Ford; before Ford falls into that vast Sargasso Sea of former automotive nameplates (that last, admittedly a phrase I picked up, sometime back, from reading Brock Yates).

After retiring Cannonball, Yates founded a motor sports event that was a legal alternative to street racing with the same amount of adrenaline.

But as Car and Driver columnist Yates points out in this captivating, demythologizing biography, none of Ferrari's racing cars "was a glittering example of daring technology," and he had almost no hand in the making of the later road cars that bore his name.
Yates deftly records the carnage of major races, business wheeling and dealing, and the political dimensions of motor racing from the pre-WW II Rome-Berlin Axis to today's ribbon-waving nationalism.
Mr Yates takes a very interesting position, he gives the impression that dislikes italians and praises germans, english and americans in the auto industry, and that this book was written to expose the "dark-side" of Ferrari.
