  Encyclopedia
Outside of the encyclopedia of Ersch and Gruber, the most ambitious encyclopedic work of the nineteenth century, the model of encyclopedic presentation, is the Brockhaus "Konversationslexikon", which took its name from Hübner, and from Bayle's "Dictionnaire" its arrangement and plan of presenting the results of scientific research and discovery in a popular form.
Early attempts were made to counteract this propaganda of religious indifferentism by the publication of encyclopedias from the Catholic point of view, such as the "Allgemeine Realencyklopädie oder Konversations-Lexikon für das katholische Deutschland" (13 vols., 1846-49; 4th ed., 1880-90); and Herder's "Konversationslexikon" (5 vols., Freiburg, 1853-57); neither proved a thorough success.
Besides these general encyclopedias dealing with different arts and sciences, there are also special technical dictionaries devoted to departments of each science, often treating recondite subjects, but in the hands of scholars facilitating acquaintance with the details of these sciences.

 Encyclopedia - MSN Encarta
The modern type of encyclopedia was largely the result of the 18th-century Age of Enlightenment, a period of intellectual curiosity and experimentation.
In this manner the form of the encyclopedia became similar to that of the dictionary, and the word dictionary (or lexicon) has been used in the title of many encyclopedic works.
The encyclopedia eventually became a work of reference in the strictest sense of the word: a work for occasional use, in which readers can locate a particular topic or item of information under the proper term in alphabetical order.

Encyclopedia - Article from FactBug.org - the fast Wikipedia mirror site
Encyclopedias can be general, containing articles on topics in many different fields (the English-language Encyclopædia Britannica and German Brockhaus are well-known examples), or they can specialize in a particular field (such as an encyclopedia of medicine, philosophy, or law).
The encyclopedia's hierarchical structure and evolving nature is particularly adaptable to a disk-based or on-line computer format, and all major printed encyclopedias had moved to this method of delivery by the end of the 20th century.
Encyclopedia is the dominant spelling used in the United States; an alternate spelling, encyclopaedia (sometimes rendered encyclopædia, with the æ ligature) is commonly used in British and Commonwealth English.

In his own article on the encyclopedia, Diderot wrote, "Were an analytical dictionary of the sciences and arts nothing more than a methodical combination of their elements, I would still ask whom it behooves to fabricate good elements." Diderot viewed the ideal encyclopedia as an index of connections.
Encyclopedias are essentially derivative from what has gone before, and particularly in the 19th century, copyright infringement was common among encyclopedia editors.

 AL - General Encyclopedias
The Brockhaus Encyclopedia was founded in 1796 by R. Löbel as the Conversationslexikon mit vorzüglicher Rücksicht auf die gegenwärtigen Zeiten and taken over in 1808 by F.
While the Brockhaus Encyclopedia, as a major reference work, strives for currency and for long-term "lexicon-worthiness" in its headings, there are lags in currency not only in some of the new subjects but also in some traditional disciplines.
Thus, the 20th edition of the Brockhaus mirrors the reunification process, allowing the publisher to speak with good reason of an "all-German encyclopedia." Modern technology reduces to two years the time needed to complete the basic 24-volume 20th edition—compared with eight years for the 19th.

 The Temple of Reason (Deists)
However, the term encyclopedia was not used to refer to such works until the 16th century, and the first general encyclopedias which succeeded in being both authoritative as well as encyclopedic in scope appeared in the 18th century.
To address those needs, an encyclopedia seeks to discuss each subject in more depth and convey the most relevant accumulated knowledge on that subject, given the overall length of the particular work.
While we take them for granted today, for their time features such as cross references to make connections across knowledge (18th century) or comprehensive indexes (19th century) were major innovations in conveying knowledge, roughly analogous to hyperlinked text in recent years.

The Rhythm (Latin, numerus), in dance, music and verse poetry, is effective as a unique classification and organizational principle, on one hand characterized by uniformity, relation to fixed measure of time, and on the other hand by grouping, structure, and variation.
Where Der große Brockhaus needs 1000 words, an Opus just takes one or two pieces of music to explain.
And it is able to deliver a lot more at once: It describes the aforementioned remarks about rhythm, this endless conglomeration of letters strung together, structured within straight laws, to get liveliness like no other speaker is capable of.

According to the German Brockhaus encyclopedia, at one time it was customary for Protestant princes to wear an insignia composed of a stylized sun and the Tetragrammaton.
A quick visit to a library or a few minutes of research in your own dictionaries will likely reveal that the name Jehovah is widely accepted as the vernacular equivalent of the Tetragrammaton.
For example, the Encyclopedia International pointedly defines the name Jehovah as the "modern form of the Hebrew sacred name of God." A recent edition of The New Encyclopædia Britannica explains that Jehovah is the "Judeo-Christian name for God."
