Brockton is the highest ranking Massachusetts city on the list ahead of Worcester (ranked 151), Springfield (164), Fitchburg-Leominster (173), Lowell (187) and Boston, which was the lowest ranked Massachusetts city in the survey at 203 overall.
Once a farming community, the City of Brockton came to prominence in the late 19th century as a center of industry and the “shoe capital” of the world, when it was in fact the largest producer of men’s shoes in the world.

The City of Brockton was incorporated in 1881 and shortly thereafter, in October 1883, was chosen by Thomas Edison as an “ideal place for testing and popularizing” his inventions.
He returned to Brockton in 1884 to supervise the installation of the world’s first three-wire underground power system and in 1884 to supervise the wiring of the world’s first centrally powered theatre, fire station, and shoe factory.
The Deborah Sampson Chapter of the DAR was organized at Brockton, Massachusetts on January 25, 1897 in the Parlor of the Belmont Hotel with 21 charter members from Brockton and surrounding towns.

Opened in May of 1992, the Brockton Fire Museum was constructed for the purpose of preserving the proud history of fire fighting in the Brockton area.
The artfully designed building, with wide pumpkin pine floors and subdued lighting, effectively conveys the atmosphere of a classic Brockton fire station during Victorian times.
The largest object on display is the beautifully restored 1850s Hand-Tub Pumper called "The Protector." There is also a touching memorial dedicated to the memory of the 13 Brockton firemen who were killed in the Strand Theater disaster in 1941 - the most firemen killed in a building fire in the nation's history.
