Injuries to the brain tend to affect large areas of the brain, sometimes causing major deficits in intelligence, memory and control of the body.
Electrophysiology, in which wire electrodes are implanted in the brain, allows scientists to record the electrical activity of individual neurons or fields of neurons, but since it requires invasive surgery, this is a technique usually reserved for lab animals.
However, the work of Paul Pierre Broca, Karl Wernicke, and Korbinian Brodmann eventually helped show that areas of the brain had specific functions, though some functions were repeated, an idea known as parallel distributed processing (Kandel, 2001).
