Brodsky Quartet @ Wigmore Hall, London : concert review
Nevertheless, it was refreshing to witness the Brodsky Quartet place the illustrious Leipzig composer's music side by side with that of the two "birthday-boys", particularly in a genre at which the former is purportedly less distinguished.
The Brodsky Quartet captured each and every one of these sentiments in a performance of the composer's String Quartet No. 3 in F major Op.
Much of the success in the quartet as a whole stemmed from the brilliant, sparkling accompaniments of Ian Belton and Paul Cassidy (second violin and viola respectively), which were often equally as riveting as the melody.

Elgar - His Music : String Quartet in E minor
The String Quartet was the first of three chamber works that he tackled in 1918 in the peaceful surroundings of Brinkwells, the country cottage that Lady Elgar had found for them in the depth of the Sussex countryside.
Fortunately, he resumed work on the quartet in October 1918, taking it forward to completion by the end of the year.
This should not be read to imply a deeper programme for the work, simply that Elgar had captured the atmosphere and spirit of the woodlands around Brinkwells that were his inspiration for the work.

No premieres lurk among the remaining works on the Brodskys' all-Shostakovich programme, but we are treated to a very fine performance indeed of the youthful Two Pieces for String Octet.
Still, no modern version is nearly as transfixing as the composer's own 1955 recording with the Beethoven Quartet, a reading of striking immediacy, pregnant with momentum in the Prelude, keenly grief-stricken in the Fugue, irresistibly vigorous in the Scherzo, insupportably despondent in the Intermezzo, extroverted in the Finale (Vanguard Classics OVC 8077).
The final work from the Brodskys is Two Pieces for String Quartet, a project that occupied Shostakovich only over Halloween night of 1931.

What looked on paper like a daunting programme — three modern works sandwiched between ferocious Bartók (the Fifth Quartet) and Beethoven (Op 18 No 3) — was received with concentration and then rapt approval, thanks largely to the leader Andrew Haveron’s witty, unpretentious spoken links.
Karen Tanaka’s At the Grave of Beethoven, a response to the very quartet that the Brodskys had played, offered first an anguished minimalist fantasia on Beethoven’s material, then a movement in which his andante theme was mulled over, in key after key, like an enraptured child turning a kaleidoscope round and round.
