		Broken varies from these other EP's, however, because it is almostentirely new material, rather than remixes of previously released material.

		"Broken Barricades" also marked the end of an era for Procol Harum, as founding guitarist Robin Trower made his exit from the band after this album was completed (though he briefly returned for Harum's 1991 comeback album, "The Prodigal Stranger").
		But he left on a very high note with "Broken Barricades," as he contributes powerful guitar-playing throughout, co-wrote three songs with lyricist Reid, and laid down a pair of lead vocals as well (he has a rougher-sounding voice than Brooker, but it fits "Song For A Dreamer" and "Poor Mohammed" just fine).
		Broken Barricades marks the end of their second period and also the end of an era with the subsequent departure of guitarist Robin Trower who was instrumental in giving the second period its harder sound.

		Broken Barricades was a great album that showcased the band at its best, whether it was Gary's bluesy piano and singing, B.J.'s powerful drumming, or Robin's blistering guitar playing.
		Chris did a fine job supporting the band with his melodic bass playing and occasional organ fills (the organ was largely absent on the record though except two tracks).

		Maple necks, he explains, give a much "cleaner" sound then the rosewood models, although the former are much more difficult to play in that the fretting hand tends to slip over the surface because of its smooth texture.
		Robin doesn't find broken strings to be a dilemma since he changes his every night after a show to insure clear resonance during his next performance.

		Broken Barricades grabbed me from the first, regardless, because of that power and authority that Procol Harum could conjure up.
		Other than Salty Dog and the live Edmonton album*--both of which I played the grooves flat on--there wasn't another PH album that came close to digging its hooks in me like this one.

		Here, apparently Robin Trower took the reins, but not as he wished, because he will leave after this one to form a supergroup that will never see the end of the day, then will form his own band (the first six albums are all excellent - but very different than on Home and this one).
		While Trower is undeniably the protagonist on this one, it would also be fair to state a special mention for Wilson’s labour (one more time), which provides an Eastern-like exotic fire with his syncopated ritualistic drumming.
		I enjoy this album a bit more than “Home”, since I find that the musical inspiration is stronger and the interplaying is more solid – "Broken Barricades" serves as an adequate Trower testament.

		The singles are understandable (two of them are 'Whiter Shade of Pale' and 'A Salty Dog', after all) but the remainder of Disc 3 SHOULD have included the 5th album 'Broken Barricades', thus presenting the complete Brooker/Trower era.
		One star off for this blown opportunity as well as the nondescript packaging (this has to be the least lavish 30th anniversary box set in memory).
		I agree with another reviewer that it would have been nice to drop some of the "alternate takes" in favor of squeezing in their excellent fifth album, "Broken Barricades"; maybe licensing was an issue.
