Audiences were justifiably surprised when Griffith released Broken Blossoms; its fragile and sensitive nature was in sharp contrast to the brash, almost overblown, spectacles for which the director had become renowned for.
Broken Blossoms is presented in its correct aspect ratio of 1.33:1.
Broken Blossoms seemed to lay to rest the insinuations that D. Griffith was a confirmed racist.

Yet, for all the starved face and the transfixed air, there was a lurking beauty about her, a something that called you in the soft curve of her cheek that cried for kisses and was fed with blows, and in the splendid mournfulness that grew in eyes and lips.
The blue cotton frock and the broken shoes could not break the loveliness of her slender figure or the shy grace of her movements as she flitted about the squalid alleys of the docks; though in all that region of wasted life and toil and decay, there was not one that noticed her, until...
He took these robes, and, with tender, reverent fingers, removed from his White Blossom the besmirched rags that covered her, and robed her again, and led her then to the heap of stuff that was his bed, and bestowed her safely.

Broken Blossoms is superb melodrama that is not going to be to the tastes of all.
It takes a little while to get into the film, but the last forty minutes are as powerful as anything you are likely to see in film and this is an absolute must for fans of the silent era and good melodrama.
Broken Blossoms is a terrific example of melodrama, and does contain a great performance from arguably the finest American film actress of all time.

Justly famous for her hysterical meltdown while trapped in a closet, she also brings off the smaller moments: her hesitation while gazing at a flower she can't possibly afford to buy is a heartbreaking piece of pantomime.
'Broken Blossoms' is an intelligent film, even progressive, as it focused on a subject taboo for the time, that of a romantic affection that crossed racial lines, in this case between the teenaged Lillian Gish and the older Richard Barthelmess who portrays a Chinese shop owner.
The 'spare the rod, spoil the child' method of childrearing was encouraged by many in both the secular and religious sectors, and alcoholism if not exactly widely tolerated was blatantly rampant and a highly visible affliction, at least in the major cities.

Griffith directed with his unique blend of poetry and realism, and Miss Gish delivers a typically first-rate performance as the girl; the result is a work of art that's both eloquent and crushing.

Silent Era : DVD : Broken Blossoms (1919) Review
Broken Blossoms is one of our favorite D.W. Griffith films, largely because of Lillian Gish’s brilliant and heartbreaking performance, which is even more impressive considering Gish was recovering from a bout with Spanish influenza contracted during production.
Broken Blossoms is also among the first of Griffith’s films that reveals his passé taste in formula story matter.
Whether the subtle racism and oppression of Broken Blossoms’ world, hidden in the guise of a call for tolerance and understanding, are the echoes of Griffith’s prejudicial personal voice or the dissecting social commentary of a great and wise mind is still the subject of debate.

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: Broken Blossoms   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Adapted from the short story "The Chink and the Girl" by Thomas Burke, Broken Blossoms begins in China, where The Yellow Man (or, "Chinky," played by Richard Barthelmess) prepares for a journey west, where, in a fine irony, he aims to enlighten the barbaric masses in the peaceful teachings of Buddha.
Although Griffith employs many racial stereotypes (at least The Yellow Man doesn't work in a laundry) and a few currently taboo descriptive terms which will no doubt provide fuel for his detractors, his empathy and reverence for The Yellow Man and his culture is unmistakble.
However, it can be reasonably argued that on an unintended level Broken Blossoms is not a tragic romance, but rather an allegory of Asian self-loathing, and, much like a subplot in Birth of a Nation, a testament to the universal, yet forbidden and unrequited, desirability of white women to other races.
