Ex Astris Scientia - Enterprise (ENT) Season 1, Part 1
The story of "Broken Bow" was convincing in essence, but it was not very cerebral, the development of the plot was rather slow and seldom really exciting.
Nevertheless, it is strange that, immediately after "Broken Bow" aired, so many fans were annoyed by the title song and demanded it to be replaced by a new theme, or at least an instrumental version, as if this were the most important issue about the series.
Ironically, it is stated in the episode itself that the development on the planet and therefore ultimately the evolution would be a matter of coincidences, but even this doesn't change anything about Phlox' opinion that the Menk are supposed to survive while the Valakians are not.

Episode articles--pilot or not--are supposed to focus around the episode and the events the episode is chronicling, not the characters themselves per se.
It's likely that the picture was originally taken from ENT: "Home", although a similar scene was shown in "BB" (probably even the same footage).
Episodes are frequently referred to in terms of their timeslot length (which is why most US TV dramas are referred to as 'hour-long' when they typically last between 40-45 minutes).

The two reasons for the casting of Blalock are pretty obvious, but she managed the "Vulcan thing" well enough in places that I think she'll work out.
Conflict: This episode goes out of its way to show Vulcans as arrogant and human beings as imperfect, emotional, and - well - human.
Next Generation's "First Contact" TV episode made it pretty clear that a bungled encounter with the Klingons led to decades of war, and that it was the Federation that bungled it.

As more proof that B&B don't know what they're doing or where they're going with this story-arc, this episode's story was co-created by Manny Coto, who just only joined the show halfway through the season, after the ''story-arc'' had already been in play for ten episodes.

"Broken Bow" is the novelization of the first episode of the television series "Enterprise" and it is a quite enjoyable read.
In this case, she is writing a novelization of an existing episode, and she does a solid, workmanlike job of it.
It lays the foundation for the formation of Starfleet, which of course came before 'The United Federation Of Planets', and includes some events leading up to the aquisition of warp technology (this book is more detailed than the television version) including a bit more about Zephran Cochran, the inventor of warp drive on earth.
