Broken Flowers (2005) - A Hollywood Jesus Movie Review
The interesting thing is that the broken flowers we see are not actually flowers; they are people—people who once lived lives in full bloom, people who once knew what it was like to live in the sunlight, people who exist and live but clearly thirst for more.
Flowers bloom throughout the home, yet the life of the woman who lives there seems fake and she seems to know it.
As she sends Johnston and his flowers away with not so subtle excuses to never see him again, however, it seems that she is just a bit to defensive against anything, even something as nice as a bouquet of flowers, that might intrude upon it.

But Broken Flowers doesn't really do that, and what's worse, it does the opposite: it invents jokes that are impossible to believe even once, and then it hammers them home repeatedly.
Broken Flowers isn't the kind of comedy that wants to surprise us with its humor or its visual strategies; from what I could tell, it wants to surprise us into finding the humor in totally familiar and essentially empty punchlines.
Busily, then, even as it struggles to look cool and unruffled, Broken Flowers chases the conditions that will allow viewers to call it sophisticated, adult, and poignant, but beneath the film's surface is not a wellspring of feeling but a wreck of contradiction and an immaturity of conception.

While watching the "Broken Flowers" DVD with my girlfriend, it dawned on me that an accessible Jim Jarmusch movie is still pretty darn inaccessible by most standards.
Although well reviewed at the time of its theatrical release, “Broken Flowers” was largely dismissed on critics' "Best of 2005" lists, although I consider it to be one of last year's finest films.
"Broken Flowers" is the closest Jarmusch has come to making a "mainstream" movie and, in my opinion, it's his strongest effort since 1984's "Stranger Than Paradise." It's the first film I've seen thus far in 2005 that will, no doubt, make my Top 10 list at year's end ("Mysterious Skin" is also a strong contender).

"Broken Flowers" is methodically paced but never boring, a subtle (maybe sometimes too subtle) study of a man whose reluctance to change and grow has left him a perpetually lonely person.
Attractively shot in a straightforward manner that works well with the low-key tone of the story and for the most part beautifully written, "Broken Flowers" is an auspicious soul-searching dramedy with the ambition to be a greater film than it all adds up as.
"Broken Flowers" may hit some rough patches as it wraps itself up, but at its core is a film that is gentle and wise and thought-provoking.

 CNN.com - EW review: 'Flowers,' Murray brilliant - Aug 5, 2005
In "Flowers," Murray plays Don Johnston, he of the slippery, almost-celebrity name, a low-affect commitmentphobe with a host of fed-up ex-girlfriends on his romantic resume.
It is perhaps not so surprising to find that Jarmusch cares too; most followers of the filmmaker's well-established brand can easily identify the vein of gentleness that runs through even his most downtown-cynical of comic scenarios, however disguised by irony.
But what is surprising is how "Broken Flowers" blossoms, as Don Johnston's past meets up with his present, into a movie of uncommon sweetness and delight.
