  The Broken Hearts Club
Not that "The Broken Hearts Club" is equal to "The Boys in the Band." The older film traveled new territory, while the new flick is full of clichi.
For the rest of the characters, the individual "problems" of each - narcissism; low self esteem; coming of age; broken relationships; the meaning of life; etc. - are handled in a pat fashion so each one is neatly tied up in the end.
Writer/director Greg Berlanti brings his experience as a gay man living in West Hollywood to the screen in "The Broken Hearts Club." That club is where the ensemble cast gather to discuss their love lives or work as waiters for the owner, mother hen Jack (John Mahoney, TV's "Frasier").

At the Hanover Medical School in Germany, for example, 30 heart attack patients were injected with stem cells from their own bone marrow and matched to 30 control patients receiving placebos.
At the University of Düsseldorf, also in Germany, 34 heart attack patients were injected with their marrow stem cells and again matched to a control group.
Fifteen months later, the injected hearts were not only measurably improved but the patients were healthier than their untreated counterparts.

 'Broken Hearts Club, The'
Writer-director Greg Berlanti wanted his film "The Broken Hearts Club" to provide an honest portrayal of the normal gay lifestyle (set in West Hollywood, where it is quite conventional) that also would appeal to straight America.
On the other hand, "The Broken Hearts Club" makes a point of having the characters comment on the less admirable traits to be found among the film's group of close pals.
Still, the core of truth at the center of "The Broken Hearts Club" and the director's amiable sincerity largely compensate for the movie's flaws.

The Broken Hearts Club - Cranky Critic® Movie Reviews
The Broken Hearts Club is none of that.
The Broken Hearts Club is the story of half a dozen or so twenty something LA based gay men looking for love and bitching to each other about the problems of finding it.
The film takes extra effort to explain some of the vagaries of this gay scene to those of us who have no exposure to it but it is at its root a dead on gay picture about relationships and gay life.

 The Broken Hearts Club (2000)
For something to be “mainstream”, it has to fit in with a very large portion of society, and the experiences of some late-twenties gay men in West Hollywood don’t mean much to the folks in Ohio.
The Broken Hearts Club appears in both its original theatrical aspect ratio of approximately 2.35:1 and in a fullscreen edition on this single-sided, double-layered DVD; the letterboxed image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.
The rear speakers added a layer of reinforcement to this, and they came to life a bit more during club scenes and other loud environments, but for the most part, they stuck with gentle ambiance.

 The Broken Hearts Club
The Broken Hearts Club is a softball team led by Jack (John Mahoney, Iron Giant, NBC's Frasier), who also runs a restaurant where most of the friends in the movie congregate.
There are other subplots involving Patrick's sister and lesbian partner wanting him to donate sperm, another one of the Broken Hearts getting dumped, and yet another one falling in love and experimenting with drugs.
But the fact remains that the characters in The Broken Hearts Club are gay, so there is something new about watching something so familiar.

Broken Hearts Club - film about friendship and gays Advocate, The - Find Articles
Set to hit theaters early this fall, The Broken Hearts Club--despite its Romantic Comedy subtitle--is primarily a movie about friendship, like its hetero predecessors Diner and The Big Chill.
Among those friends is his housemate, Cole, a part-time actor and full-time heartbreaker (played by Cain) who gets a dose of his own medicine when he has a fling with a closeted action star, played by Baywatch Hawaii's Michael Bergin.
Both men play on a softball team with their fellow waiters from the Jack of Broken Hearts restaurant, a West Hollywood, Calif., eatery owned by a gay father figure played by Frasier's John Mahoney.

DVD REVIEW: "THE BROKEN HEARTS CLUB"
I'm certainly not in the position to confirm or deny that statement, and I can't attest whether writer/director Greg Berlanti's feature film debut, "The Broken Hearts Club," is any closer to the truth and/or reality.
I can say, however, that despite it being a reasonably entertaining film with a mainstream veneer, it clearly didn't generate the great homosexual crossover with heterosexual box office success at the movies as some had predicted.

Movie Review - The Broken Hearts Club - www.ericdsnider.com - The Official Website of Eric D. Snider
"The Broken Hearts Club" is an earnest, inconsequential romantic comedy that wins most of its points for sincerity -- Berlanti clearly meant every word of it, no matter how uneven it may be -- and for treating gay romance as a mainstream topic, not some straight-to-video curiosity with a bunch of no-name actors.

THE BROKEN HEARTS CLUB: A ROMANTIC COMEDY - DVD
The Broken Hearts Club has little fights with itself about queer cinema that make it more intriguing than any film subtitled "a romantic comedy" has the right to be.
Initially, The Broken Hearts Club seems to petition for the replacement of Hollywood's homosexual stereotypes with less ingrained caricatures.
Berlanti's film exhibits certain lazy and potentially harmful traits common to gay cinema's most enlightened (and light-hearted) examples, such as the Broken Hearts' startling lack of athleticism (they feel threatened by opposing players who need canes and walkers to travel bases) and a largely straight (and talented, don't get me wrong) cast acting fey.

 HYBRIDMAGAZINE.COM | NOVEMBER 2000 - FILMS - BROKEN HEARTS CLUB
THE BROKEN HEARTS CLUB has arrived in theaters with a quite a splash this fall, being billed as a sort of non-gay gay movie.
It should put you in the mood for spring, even at 10 in the morning, but THE BROKEN HEARTS CLUB falls short, relying far too heavily on a SWINGERS-like style sense and some pretty, pretty people to get your juices flowing.
Beyond this, BROKEN HEARTS CLUB adopts the FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL boilerplate of our hero's romance lost, found, lost, found… against a backdrop of friends' romantic entanglements, and yes, even the death of someone effervescent and charming.

The script for The Broken Hearts Club arose from writer/director Berlanti's frustration that there weren't any films being made which showed the normal lives of gay men.
It's the sort of ensemble piece that actors love and, besides, playing gay is to the 2000s what being in a Disease of the Week Movie was in the 1980s: every young actor must go through this rite of passage before they can graduate to bigger, better films.

Writer-director Greg Berlanti may have been trying to break the mold of gay-niche movies with this debut feature, but for all his apparent skill and affection, The Broken Hearts Club is all talk and no action.
A group of gay friends comfort and criticize each other as they experience different strains of relationship strife, creating a self-perpetuating shield of depressed gayness that effectively seals them off from the external world.
Despite some charismatic performances, The Broken Hearts Club feels like an entire movie about those quirky gay neighbors usually relegated to supporting parts, only this time they're omnipresent and even more tiresome in numbers.
