On the other side of the present caldera is Brokeoff Mountain (9235 feet), which is an erosional remnant of Mount Tehama and the second highest peak in the park.
Sulphur Works is a geothermal area in between Lassen Peak and Brokeoff Mountain that is thought to mark an area near the center of Tehama's now-gone cone.
There are four shield volcanoes in the park; Mount Harkness (southwest corner of the park), Red Mountain (at south-central boundary), Prospect Peak (in northwest corner), and Raker Peak (north of Lassen Peak).

The access trail and parking area to Brokeoff Mountain is along Route 89 (the southern entry road into Lassen National Park) about 4.5 miles north of State Road 36.
The trail and mountain is actually in the borders of Lassen Volcanic National Park, although the trailhead and parking area are located before the fee station (NOTE: technically, the park entrance fee must be paid before parking).
Although the park road is closed from (approximately) November through June (when you can expect dangerous winter conditions on the mountain), the access road is usually plowed just past the southern fee station.

 Lassen Volcanic National Park
The park is located in the southern region of the volcanic Cascade Mountains, north of the Sierra Nevada Range, west of the Great Basin and east of the Central Valley of California.
It was erected as a plug dome of a large andesitic stratovolcano, Brokeoff Volcano (Mt. Tehama), which was active as late as 400,000 years ago.
Remnants of Brokeoff Volcano that encircle the caldera are Brokeoff Mountain (9235'), Mt. Dillar (9087'), Mt. Conard (8204'), and Diamond Peak (7968') which was the central core area of Brokeoff Volcano.

Along the way, I was sidetracked by the Brokeoff Mountain overlook, just before the Sulphur Works.
I stopped here to take a picture of the mountain I was about to climb.
From here are nice views of (you guessed it) Little Hot Springs Valley and the mountains on the opposite side of the valley.

But we decided that Brokeoff is less traveled and would give us some excellent views of the surrounding area without having to share the trail with 200 other hikers as a typical Saturday in August would most likely be on the Lassen trail.
She had returned to the car after blisters she received from the earlier Brokeoff hike was just too much to bear.
Our choices to climb Brokeoff and Lassen at the times we did were wise ones, since we did not have to share the summits with anyone else on both peaks.

We hit the Brokeoff Mountain trail which is 0.3 mile before the park entrance fee station and proceeded on snowshoes starting at 12:00 noon.
By 5:00 pm we reached the crest of the ridge on the southwest of Brokeoff Mountain and made camp in the snow.
We were back on the snowshoes at 9:00 am and climbed straight up the steep southern slope of Brokeoff Mountain and gained the summit at 10:15.

The new plan was to walk the long ridge that connects Eagle Peak to Mt.Diller, and Brokeoff Mountain.
Exposed high on the ridge I had an awesome view of Shasta,Lassen,and Brokeoff, but as it got darker it got windier.
I knew that all my friends were partying and having fun together, and that I also would be there soon, but I had to thank the mountains and wind for humbling me, and showing me the true meaning of inner strength, and for that I an greatful.

At the west end of the mountain just before the last half mile of the climb, there is a good view of Mt. Shasta.
From the top of the mountain there are good views of Lassen Peak, Conard, Chaos Crags, Diller, Shasta, and other mountains of the vicinity.

According to my understanding Lassen Peak trail was less appealing than Brokeoff.
Chao’s toes were not yet totally recovered from the Half Dome torture and were worsened by Brokeoff trail, besides we needed to be home early for grocery shopping, cat bathes, and house cleaning.

We climbed into the SUV and motored on from the Sulphur Works, passed by the Brokeoff Mountain trailhead (a four-hour round-trip hike to 9,235 feet) and stopped at Peak Necessities, an interim concession that sells everything from hiking sticks to plush toys.
The boulders were called "hot rocks" because they were sizzling when they came to a halt and took days to cool off.

(top, down) I never noticed Mt Brokeoff in my previous visits to the park, but this is a pretty awseome peak in its own right.
Mt Brokeoff is the second highest peak in the park (elevation 9235 feet).
