Some Bromeliads, such as Billbergia amoena 'Red', Cryptanthus 'Cascade' and Bromelia balansae, produce a proportion of their pups on long stolons (otherwise called suckers).
In the case of Bromelia balansae, these suckers grow under the ground.

Bromelia - A genus of plant whose lance-shaped leaves yield long, strong, fine fiber 6 to 8 feet (182.9 to 243.8 cm) in length.
Uses: rope, belts, bagging, carpets, etc. Principal species which yield fiber are: Bromelia ananas, Bromelia karatas, Bromelia pinguin, Bromelia argentina (caraguata fiber), Bromelia fastuosa, Bromelia sagenaria, Bromelia sylvestris, and Bromelia serra.
Bromelia is cultivated in Mexico as a textile plant.

The first example is the plant that everyone KNOWS is Bromelia balansae but may be B.
This dwarf (for the genus!) species is not nearly as lethal as the others and is my choice to represent Bromelias in my collection.
