Topic: Bromhidrosis

eMedicine - Bromhidrosis : Article by Wingfield Rehmus, MD, MPH
Bromhidrosis is a chronic condition in which excessive odor, usually an unpleasant one, emanates from the skin.
The skin appears normal, except when bromhidrosis is associated with concomitant skin conditions such as erythrasma, in which case a sharply marginated erythematous macular rash is seen, or trichomycosis axillaris, in which case concretions are visible on the hairs in the affected area.
Eccrine bromhidrosis may rarely be caused by metabolic disorders, primarily disturbances in amino acid metabolism (which include phenylketonuria, trimethylaminuria [fish odor syndrome]), sweaty feet syndrome, odor of cat syndrome, isovaleric academia, and hypermethioninemia.

  ODOR PROBLEMS (BROMHIDROSIS) - Advanced-Antiperspirant.com
Strictly defined, bromhidrosis (or osmidrosis, as it is sometimes called), is a condition in which an excessive odour, usually offensive, emanates from the skin.
Beyond that, variations in the occurrence of bromhidrosis are unexplained, there are individual differences in the composition of apocrine sweat but no studies have yet been made to determine causal factors.
Individuals suffering from Bromhidrosis produce an overpowering and unpleasant odour and no matter how much deodorant, antiperspirant or perfume is used, the odour remains most of the time, despite almost constant washing.

Bromhidrosis is a condition of abnormal or offensive body odor determined to a large extent by apocrine gland secretion, although other sources may play a role.
Excessive eccrine secretion may favor the spread of apocrine sweat and contribute further to bromhidrosis or, conversely, may cause a decrease in odor because the eccrine sweat dilutes the apocrine sweat.
Bromhidrosis is believed to be more common in patients of dark-skinned ethnicity.

BROMHIDROSIS ODOUR PROBLEMS - Odaban Advanced Antiperspirant
Apocrine bromhidrosis never occurs before puberty, because the particular glands involved are not active in the pre-pubescent individual.
There is, however, one very important distinction that must be made between the true bromhidrosis patient and the bromhidrosiphobic individual: the latter being people who have a morbid dread of bodily odours and unreal images about what they smell, or in this case, what they think they smell.
Shaving the axillary hair (men and women) is an absolute necessity for all patients with apocrine bromhidrosis, in order to prevent the accumulation of sweat and bacteria on the hair shafts.

 Bromhidrosis :: FootSmart
One of the top causes of bromhidrosis is excessive perspiration (hyperhidrosis) and moisture, which provides a breeding ground for bacteria and yeast.
The good news is that bromhidrosis is not dangerous to your health, though it does create an environment for the growth of microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungus.
In turn, bromhidrosis – in combination with hyperhidrosis – can indicate the presence of other more serious health conditions, so it is always good to discuss the problem with your physician.

The introduction of silver-impregnated fibers woven into an OTC insole presents a means to control tinea pedis infections and bromhidrosis, because of the antifungal and antibacterial properties of silver.
In one case(3) the efficacy of X-Static was proven more bactericidal than silver nitrate, and in a later study (4) this silver-layered fabric was shown to be effective in killing multi-drug resistant bacteria.
While not indicated for acute tinea pedis or bacterial infections, the recent availability of silver threads within readily available OTC insoles provides the practitioner with a new, proven option in controlling low-grade recurrent tinea and/or bromhidrosis that is popular with patients because of its ease of use and inexpensive cost.
