Brompton Road tube station - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brompton Road tube station is a disused station on the Piccadilly Line of the London Underground.
Although it was convenient for both the Brompton Oratory and the Victoria and Albert Museum it saw little traffic, and by October 1909 some services passed it without stopping.
When a new entrance was built onto Knightsbridge nearby, it sounded the death-knell for Brompton Road which finally closed on 30 July 1934.

KENSINGTON - LoveToKnow Article on KENSINGTON
The Roman Catholic church of Our Lady of Victories lies close to Kensington Road, and in Brompton Road is the Oratory of St Philip Neri, a fine building with richly decorated interior, noted for the beauty of its musical services, as is the Carmelite Church in Church Street.
In Kensington Gardens, near the upper end of Exhibition Road, which separates the two museums, was held the Great Exhibition of 1851, the hail of which is preserved as the Crystal Palace at Sydenham.
The greater part of the gardens, however, with the Albert Memorial, erected by Queen Victoria in memory of Albert, prince consort, the Albert Hall, opposite to it, one of the principal concert-halls in London, and the Imperial Institute to the south, are actually within the city of Westminster, though commonly connected with Kensington.

Underground History - Brompton Road Underground Station
With a very similar history to Down Street, Brompton Road, situated between Knightsbridge and South Kensington stations started service in 1906 when the Finsbury Park to Hammersmith stretch of the Piccadilly Line was opened.
Brompton Road therefore cannot be used as an emergency exit point despite the fact that its spiral staircase is still intact.
The reason for the drop is that when Brompton Road was converted for wartime use, the whole of the platform area was excavated and removed.

 Reference.com/Encyclopedia/Knightsbridge tube station
It was decided to close Brompton Road and replace it with an additional southerly exit from Knightsbridge (reached by escalator) at Harrods (in order to reduce crowds at the other exit).
Eventually, in 2004, this was solved by the expansion of this exit into a large circular area, under the road towards Harrods, with the way out of the station being by a stairway in the midst of the road.
Such alterations to roads would not have been possible when the station was considered part of a private business, rather than as part of a public organisation bringing significant levels of custom to the area.

In 1972 Brompton Road was widened, leading to the demolishion of the larger part of the station building, its replacement by the white-fronted facade seen in these photographs, taken in September 2000.
As at Down Street, the screen walls on the platform were not removed, and so all that is noticable at track-level is a brief change to open brickwork on the right of the train, and very grimy tiles on the left.
