South Shropshire is the most rural district of one of the UK's most rural counties, the population of the district is 40,000 spread out over 1,027 km² of forest, mountains, moors, hills and poor quality farmland.
Economically the district is dependent on tourism, now that farming is of little economic importance (and lead and coal mining having died in the area years ago), although there is some light industry around Church Stretton.
The District of South Shropshire covers an area of 1,028 square kilometres, or 397 square miles, which is roughly one third of the administrative county of Shropshire.

BROMSGROVE and towns adjacent to their country seat at Hewell Grange, were busily drawing up plans to celebrate the coming of age of the Hon Other Robert Windsor-Clive, son of Lord Windsor, whose birthday was next month.
District councillors were expected to be told that a 50 per cent grant would be available for the building, expected to cost more than £100,000.
The district council was opposed to the building of six houses, one to the acre, and costing between £5,000 and £6,000, on a plot between Shepley Road and Billy Lane.

BROMSGROVE District Council is the slowest in Worcestershire to process new housing benefit claims according to figures released by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Authorities have a target of 36 days for processing new claims but Bromsgrove, which took an average of 62 days over the year, was among the worst in the whole country.
Leigh Butler, head of revenue services at Bromsgrove District Council, said: "We have recently implemented a change in working procedures and processing with the intention and aim to improve the council's performance.

BROMSGROVE'S Evergreen Scouts celebrated their 21st birthday by holding a service at the same place, day and time as when they had been founded in the loft at John Green's home, Whitford Hall, in 1930.
Bromsgrove had been one of 131 towns and villages visited by researchers while compiling the study.
Bromsgrove District Council denied shoppers were likely to go to nearby towns where it was free.

 Bromsgrove District Millennium Camp
The Bromsgrove District Millennium Camp was held at Jefferies farm in Upper Bently near Hanbury on the edge of Bromsgrove.
The evenings activities consisted of a 'campfire' (due to the unpredictable weather, this became 'campfire songs in the marquee'), a barbeque and a brilliant fireworks display.
The evening was open to invited visitors, these included the chairman of Bromsgrove District Council and the mayor and mayoress of Droitwich, many friends of Scouting and members of Scout Fellowship, parents, families and members of Group and District executive committees.
