 REVIEW OF LITERATURE
Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure conducted by placing a fiberoptic scope into the lung of a patient,  then wedging the tip of a bronchoscope into a bronchus (subsegmental), and instilling a known volume of saline (sterile water) solution into the distal airway, then aspirating up this volume.
Linder et al found the sensitivity of bronchoalveolar lavage for the diagnosis of lung carcinoma to be similar to that of transbronchial biopsy and Wang needle biopsy.

Comparative study of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid: effect of species, age, and method of lavage.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid has been used as a probe to detect lung injury in toxicological studies and to diagnose the disease state of the lung in humans.
Finally, the effect of the method of lavage on lavage fluid content was evaluated by comparing lavage fluid obtained from an excised lung with that from a lavage performed in vivo.
Performing lavage in vivo, as compared to in vitro, did not greatly alter the lavage fluid except for a trend toward a higher level of sialic acid in fluid taken from the living animal.

Bronchoalveolar Lavage in Cats - WSAVA 2002
Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is a valuable tool for the diagnostic evaluation of cats with lower respiratory tract disease.
Bronchoalveolar lavage was performed using the sterile endotracheal tube technique.
The bronchoalveolar lavage is also useful to evaluate the type of inflammatory response present, but this does usually not have great implications in the further treatment.

Bronchoalveolar lavage samples the alveolar epithelial lining fluid directly and has been found to be useful in the diagnosis of several respiratory infections including tuberculosis(4).
Gastric lavage was done on 3 consecutive mornings after an overnight fast with 30-35 ml of 0.9% saline and the lavaged specimen sent for staining and culture.
Bronchoalveolar lavage was obtained by flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy performed on the last day of gastric lavage by a trained person (MS).

 Bronchoalveolar lavage
Bronchoalveolar lavage is a diagnostic procedure of washing a sample of cells and secretions from the alveolar and bronchial airspaces.
A major clinical limitation for the utility of bronchoalveolar lavage is the large range of normal values for each parameter, which makes BALF insensitive in detecting disease.
The standard techniques for investigating the cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid include millipore filter preparations stained with Papanicolaou and cytocentrifuge preparations stained with May-Grünwald-Giemsa.

Upper and middle lobe bronchoalveolar lavage to diagnose Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia [see comments]
The distribution of disease may have also affected the diagnostic accuracy of standard bronchoalveolar lavage of the middle lobe, with a reduction in sensitivity from about 90 to 65%.
We performed a follow-up prospective study of 38 consecutive patients on aerosolized pentamidine in whom we lavaged both the middle lobe and an upper lobe.
We found that bilobar lavage including routine lavage of an upper lobe increases the diagnostic sensitivity of bronchoalveolar lavage alone to 95% compared with 65% if lavage is performed only in the middle lobe (p < 0.05).
