Nikon MicroscopyU: Human Pathology Digital Image Gallery - Bronchopneumonia
Bronchopneumonia, or bronchial pneumonia, is a type of pneumonia that originates in the bronchioles of the lungs, which are the smaller ducts of the bronchial tubes.
Bronchopneumonia at 20x Magnification - An x-ray of the chest of a patient with bronchopneumonia often reveals a scattering of heterogenous opacities, rather than the homogenous opacity characteristic of lobar pneumonia, due to the involvement of multiple sites in the lungs.
Bronchopneumonia at 10x Magnification - Together with influenza, pneumonia ranks as the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, although the disease is much less deadly than it was prior to the development of pneumococcal and influenza vaccines.

 Chapter 9
Bronchopneumonia is often observed in cases of swine influenza which is considered to be caused by a specific viral agent and Hemophilus influenza suis acting in concert.
Bronchopneumonia in calves is considered to be a primary viral infection (especially PI3 virus) with Pasteurella spp.
However, as a lesion, the bronchopneumonia is usually overshadowed by empyemia of the pleural cavity.

 Indian Pediatrics - Editorial
This study was designed to differentiate beacterial bronchopneumonia, bronchiolitis or viral pneumonia and bronchial asthma on the basis of clinical parameters and to correlate clinical findings with simple laboratory data.
Patients of bronchopneumonia having normal leukocyte and neutrophil counts were excluded from bacterial pneumonia group while patients of bronchiolitis who showed neutrophilia were shifted to bacterial bronchopneumonia group.
Thus, 50 cases finally diagnosed as bronchopneumonia on the basis of neutro-philia were given antibiotics while 34 cases with normal blood counts or lymphocytosis were presumed to be that of bronchiolitis or viral pneumonia and were not given any antibiotics and only supportive therapy was given.

PetPlace.com - Article: Bacterial Bronchopneumonia in Dogs
Bronchopneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs and the bronchi, which are the larger air passages conveying air to and within the lungs.
Bronchopneumonia is usually related to a bacterial infection and may be caused by many different kinds.
Mildly affected pets that are well hydrated and eating properly may be treated as outpatients, but would require frequent follow-ups to monitor the progression of the infection.

CHAPTER II   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Inasmuch as bronchopneumonia is almost invariably a complicating or secondary, rather than a primary infection, and its incidence in men of military age, generally speaking, is very low as compared to that of the lobar type, attention was at once focused on the coincident epidemic of measles as the probable primary cause of the pneumonias.
Thus it is seen that influenza, bronchitis, bronchopneumonia, and lobar pneumonia were responsible for 1,125,401 primary admissions in the entire Army.
Of the deaths charged to bronchitis 84.5 per cent were recorded as secondarily due to pneumonia, of which 52 per cent were described as bronchopneumonia and 32.5 per cent as lobar pneumonia, a proportion of 1.6 to 1 as compared with almost exactly 2 to 1 in the cases recorded as secondary to influenza.

Measles is a major cause of death in many parts of the tropics and the tropical pattern of measles lung infection must be distinguished from tuberculosis and staphylococcal or other bronchopneumonia.
The absence of lymphadenopathy, and the coarse pattern and uneven distribution of the consolidation of measles bronchopneumonia (usually bilateral but seldom symmetrical) help to distinguish the infections; however, in the acute stage the diagnosis is a clinical responsibility.
The imaging of encysted pleural fluid often calls for sinography, which is a more useful and more common investigation in the tropics than in most parts of the world.

Bacterial Bronchopneumonia - WSAVA 2004 Congress
Bacterial bronchopneumonia is invariably a consequence of another disease process or injury to the lung that allows the resident bacterial population of the respiratory system to proliferate.
The role of ageing, immunocompromise and systemic illness in the development of bronchopneumonia is well recognised in humans, but is not fully characterised in the dog and cat.
The presence of alveolar density, with air bronchograms and a cranio-ventral distribution, is highly suggestive of bronchopneumonia, and in a severely compromised patient is reason enough to make a tentative diagnosis and institute intensive therapy.

Pneumonia - Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention
Pneumonia-causing bacteria is present in many throats, but when the body's defenses are weakened (for example, by illness, old age, malnutrition or impaired immunity) the bacteria can multiply, working its way into the lungs, inflaming the air sacs and filling the lungs with liquid and pus.
The bacteria that cause bacterial pneumonia are streptococcus pneumonia (resulting in lobar pneumonia), hemophilus influenza (resulting in bronchopneumonia), legionella pneumophilia (resulting in Legionnaires' disease) and staphylococcus aureus.
Half of all pneumonias are believed to be caused by viruses, such as influenza (flu), adenovirus, coxsackievirus, chickenpox, measles, cytomegalovirus and respiratory syncytial virus.

Cavitary pulmonary tuberculosis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Cavities form when necrosis involves the wall of an airway and the semi-liquid necrotic material is discharged into the bronchial tree from where it is usually coughed up and may infect others.
This infected material may seed other parts of the lung via the airways to produce a tuberculous bronchopneumonia.
If swallowed, infection of the G.I. tract may result.  Communication of the centers of the tuberculous lesions with the airway exposes the bacteria to a high concentration of oxygen and promotes their proliferation.

On why the disease had struck only children, he said that children were generally more susceptible to any disease than adults.

ARS | Publication request: Surfactant Protein D Expression in Normal and Pneumonic Ovine Lung
Since a hallmark of bronchopneumonia is the initiation of inflammation in the bronchi and bronchoalveolar junction, we chose a classic ruminant model of bronchopneumonia caused by Mannheimia haemolytica to study the expression of SP-D within the bronchioles of infected lambs.
SP-D expression in lung was detected by immunohistochemistry during acute (1 day), subacute (15 days), and chronic (46 days) bronchopneumonia using a polyclonal rabbit anti-human SP-D antibody that was specific for ovine SP-D by SDS-PAGE and Western blot.
The immunohistochemical staining was scored for the amount of staining within each cell (intensity) and the number of cells stained for SP-D within each bronchiole.
