Brontosaurus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Brontosaurus (pronounced /ˈbɹɒn.təˌsɔː.ɹəs/), meaning "thunder lizard" (from the Greek brontē/βροντη meaning 'thunder' and sauros/σαυρος meaning 'lizard'), is a deprecated genus of sauropod dinosaurs.
The Brontosaurus was misidentified by its discoverer Othniel Charles Marsh, in 1879 and the designation persisted as the official term in the literature until at least 1974.
The terms brontosaurus, brontosaurs and brontosaurians (no capital 'B'; no italics) are often used to refer to an infraorder of sauropods including genera such as Brachiosaurus, Camarasaurus, Diplodocus and Supersaurus, as well as Apatosaurus.

Known also as the thunder lizard because it is thought the ground must have shaken as it walked, brontosaurus was a plant eating dinosaur that was longer than a tennis court.
The brontosaurus also had a sharp claw on the inside of each front foot which, with the dinosaur standing on its hind legs, could be used in attack.
Brontosaurus probably evolved in the late Jurassic around 150 million years ago and died out at the end of the Cretaceous period.

 The UnMuseum - Brontosaurus
The Brontosaurus, a member of a family of dinosaurs that walked on four legs with long necks and long tails called sauropods, was the victim of a war that was played out over a hundred years ago.
Despite the poor Brontosaurus losing its official status very early in the 20th century, the name continued to be used in popular books, semi-technical articles and even on museum displays.
The question of the popular Brontosaurus name verses the technically-correct Apatosaurus name came to a head in 1989 when the U.S. Post Office decided to release a set of four stamps illustrating "dinosaurs." One in the series was a picture of a large sauropod labeled Brontosaurus.

It didn't matter to him that the head he found was already attached to another body (The body of a Camarasaurus).
This mistake lasted until 1975, when Dr. Jack Mc Intosh and Dr. David Berman proved to the scientific community that the Brontosaurus was actually the body of an Apatosaurus.

In 1903, however, scientists determined that Brontosaurus fossils were not from a new species, but from a dinosaur already discovered—the Apatosaurus.
The bad news about the Brontosaurus, however, was not noticed by the U.S. Post Office, which issued four dinosaur stamps in 1989: Tyrannosaurus, Stegosaurus, Pterandon—and Brontosaurus.
As Elmer Riggs, the scientist who uncovered the duplication, wrote: "As the term 'Apatosaurus' has priority, 'Brontosaurus' will be regarded as a synonym." Usually, preference is given to the first name that was assigned—even if the other name, Brontosaurus, was clearly more popular.

Apologetics Press - The Brontosaurus Brouhaha
Brontosaurus soon became everyone’s typical sauropod—indeed the canonical herbivorous dinosaur of popular consciousness, from the Sinclair logo to Walt Disney’s Fantasia...
Further complicating the problem is the fact that many scientists today use the terms “brontosaurus” or “brontosaurs” (no capital B, no italics) to refer to a group of the sauropod dinosaurs (known in taxonomic circles as an “infraorder”;).
So, while it is incorrect technically to speak of a Brontosaurus (since the animal should be known by its designation, Apatosaurus), it is correct to speak of “brontosaurs” or “brontosaurians,” since such a moniker refers to a group within the sauropods.

The Straight Dope: Is it true the brontosaurus never really existed?
(2) The brontosaurus was never really called the brontosaurus; that was just its popular name, and the dinosaur establishment for unspecified reasons is now cracking down and insisting on the scientific name Apatosaurus ajax.
Thus, officially speaking, there is no such thing as a brontosaurus, and what's worse, what you thought was a brontosaurus actually doesn't look like what you thought it looked like.
The problem with the name got straightened out in 1903, at least for scientists, when it was pretty firmly established that the brontosaurus was the same species as the apatosaurus, which Marsh had discovered in 1877.

 Brontosaurus versus Apatosaurus
Because Cope and Marsh were such rivals, they both strived to be the first to describe a new species of dinosaur, and to send the bones back east to their respective museums.
The name Apatosaurus means "deceptive lizard." In 1879, he described and named Brontosaurus, which means "thunder lizard." Marsh thought the two species were closely related, but were distinct enough to place them in different genera (the plural form of "genus").
Apatosaurus was the teenager, and Brontosaurus was the adult.

Apatosaurus, often mistakenly refered to as Brontosaurus, is a genus of sauropod dinosaurs that lived about 140 million years ago, during the Jurassic period.
In 1903, it was discovered that the apatosaur was in fact a juvenile brontosaur, and the name Apatosaurus, having been published first, was deemed to have priority as the official name; Brontosaurus was relegated to being a synonym.
It is the holotype for the genera, and two partial skeletons have been found including part of a skull.
