Bishop was elected to the Senate for New South Wales in July 1987, and proved an aggressive debater with an ability to annoy ministers in the Labor government, particularly Foreign Minister Gareth Evans.
Bishop resigned from the Senate in February 1994 to contest the Mackellar by-election in the House of Representatives, a move widely seen as furthering her leadership ambitions.
In November 2005, Bishop expressed the view that "she is opposed to the wearing of the Muslim headscarf, where it does not form part of the school uniform.

While listening to Mrs Bishop discuss the issue with Terry Lane on Radio National Mrs Bishop appeared to be influenced more by what she may have seen, heard or read from a conservative think tank than any direct knowledge of Muslim Australians living in her electorate.
If Mrs Bishop were to use her substantial talents and experience (in both politics and the law) to take the industrial fight to the union movement, she would be doing the small business people in her electorate a huge service.

It’s a new appointment and I think Bronwyn brings very special skills to that job and I think she will make an outstanding contribution through the year.
Bronwyn has a few more things to say and a few other observations to make about some of the activities but I know that 1999 will be a great year in recognising the contribution of older Australians to our modern Australian community.
