The Bronx High School of Science was founded in 1938 by resolution of the Department of Education of the City of New York with Dr. Morris Meister as the first principal of the school.
The building, built in 1918 for Evander Childs High School, was previously occupied by Walton High School (1930) and by an annex of DeWitt Clinton High School (1935).
Bronx Science started with 150 ninth grade students and 250 tenth grade students and the remaining facilities were used by DeWitt Clinton.

Bronx Science is a stressful, highly competitive place, with large classes and a demanding, traditional curriculum.
Unlike most New York City schools which until recently hired teachers according to the seniority provision of the teachers' contract, Bronx Science has followed what is called "school based option." That means new teachers are interviewed and vetted by a faculty committee, rather than being assigned according to seniority.

In order for schools to participate in the program they must be invited by Elsevier, which selects schools based on measures of student achievement in science and math, such as their number of AP students, National Merit Scholars, and winners of leading science competitions like the Intel Science Talent Search.
Even for students at the Bronx High School of Science who don’t have the opportunity to communicate directly with journal authors, the journal research they read through ScienceDirect serves as a link between their work and the world of professional science.

It is a tale of two high schools, just a block apart, but a world of difference in between, especially when it comes to cell phones.
When a cell phone rings at Bronx Science, according to a student, the teenagers are just told to turn it off or put it on vibrate, and the official reasons for the ban are scoffed at the school.
A spokesman said that Bronx Science does not have metal detectors so some cell phones get in, but he says when they are seen, they are confiscated.

March 6, 1997: The Alumni Association of the prestigious Bronx High School of Science has recently funded the installation of Elliot Essman's "No Smoke" software in an effort to curtail teenage smoking and educate young people on the dangers of cigarettes and tobacco products.
"Our school has been famous for generations for its 'smart kids,' but we still have a major problem with tobacco," remarks David Hutt, the Substance Abuse Counselor at Bronx Science.
"When I first came to the school to show the program," says developer Elliot Essman, "I was a little early and had to wait in my car for ten minutes, watching young people leaning against a fence, smoking.
