  Victoria Alcoholic Cocktails Recipes
Short mixed drinks, are made to an exact recipe rather than poured in a haphazard fashion, which is one of the reasons for their deceptively powerful kick.
Mixed drinks were popular in the nineteenth century, and the use of the word cocktail goes back to 1806 (or 1809, depending upon which reference book you prefer).
Among their best known names, a cobbler is a wine based mixed drink, originally made with sherry; sours are mixtures of spirit, lemon, and sugar, and daisies are similar to sours but with the addition of a sweet syrup.

NEW-FASHIONEDS Cocktails created in the spirit of Jerry Thomas include, from left, Appointment in Angola at Pico on Greenwich Street; the Bronx cocktail, in front of the Madeline mural at Bemelmans Bar in the Carlyle; and the Orient Point at Town on West 56th Street.
A typical cocktail was a mere two to three ounces, and just multiplying the proportions to fit larger glasses can throw a drink out of whack, especially when citrus juices are part of the recipe.
It is now routine for bars and restaurants to have special cocktail menus, and for hotel and restaurant groups to hire specialist beverage managers to curate their cocktail program.

The resurgence of interest in old-fashioned cocktails (including the Old-Fashioned itself) has demonstrated that there aren’t too many shiny, new ideas under the sun.
As Solon related the story in the book Old Waldorf Bar Days (1931), he’d been challenged to come up with a new cocktail (New York had the Manhattan since the 1880s), so he tossed together some gin, vermouth, and orange juice, and named it the Bronx Cocktail after a visit to the Bronx Zoo.
The cocktail is still the signature item at the “new” Waldorf-Astoria (which opened in 1931 on Park Avenue) at the Bull & Bear bar.
