BRONZE SCULPTURE [bronze sculpture] Bronze is ideal for casting art works; it flows into all crevices of a mold, thus perfectly reproducing every detail of the most delicately modeled sculpture.
The Egyptians used bronze, cast and hammered, for utensils, armor, and statuary far in advance of the Bronze Age in Europe.
During the Renaissance, Italian sculptors wrought magnificent bronzes of many sorts, outstanding among which are Ghiberti's doors to the baptistery of Florence and the sculptures of Donatello, Verrocchio, Giovanni Bologna, Pollaiuolo, and Cellini.

The manufacture of bronzes is highly skilled work, and a number of distinct casting processes may be employed, including lost-wax casting (and its modern-day spin-off ceramic shell casting), sandcasting and centrifugal casting.

The sculptures are attached to this funnel by "welding" wax sticks (sprues) to both the sculpture and the funnel.
Sculptures are generally placed close to the bottom of the funnel (since the bronze starts to cool the second it hits the funnel).
Thicker sprues are joined to the sculpture where the bronze will enter (the bottom), while thinner sprues (vents) are joined at the top edges of the sculpture and reach to the top plane of the funnel.
