Brooches are frequently decorated with enamel or with gemstones and may be solely for ornament (as in the stomacher), or sometimes serve a practical function as a fastening, perhaps for a cloak.
The earliest known brooches are from the Bronze Age.

Well, as she had a birthday coming up, I decided to make it as part of her present (though as the brooch, she had found something for her hair).
Alas no-one has posted details on making the butterfly brooch on ACS and I didn't find any in the yahoogroup archive, but ACS does have tips for making the Chase belt buckle and the Fellowship pin, there were also some posted on the yahoogroups list.
However, to make it easier to attach a brooch pin I would added some sculpey to the back of the left upper wing beside where it has the right upper wing going over it, to make this area more level.

The grave of a viking woman was accidentally discovered in 1963 and revealed two oval brooches and a beautiful, ornamental ringed cloak-pin now known as the Westness Brooch.
The silvergilt ringed pin with gold filigree and inlaid amber was probably made around 750AD, but was still used in the Viking period in the 9th century.
