  Ideas--Brook Farm History
Brook Farm began as an experiment in Christian living and became a center of reform activity to promote the beliefs of Fourierism.
The Brook Farmers introduced several changes in social organization between 1841 and 1844 that involved three aspects of their economy: the plan for reuniting social classes, the voluntary system of labor, and the choice of agriculture as the principal industry.
The Brook Farm Institute for Agriculture and Education was the name the Brook Farmers chose for their community in 1841.

Founded by George Ripley, a Unitarian minister, the farm was initially financed by a joint-stock company with 24 shares of stock at $500 per share.
Brook Farm was mainly an outgrowth of Unitarianism, although most of the members had left that church and were advocates of the literary and philosophical movement known as transcendentalism.
The Harbinger (1845–49), printed at Brook Farm and edited by Ripley, was rather a Fourierist weekly newspaper than the organ of Brook Farm and was continued in New York City with Parke Godwin as editor after 1847.

The Farm consisted largely of unmarried men and women in their twenties and the social life was very casual and friendly, though respectable.
A typical day on the farm would consist of waking around 6:00 am, having a meal at the Hive and working for 8 to 10 hours at a verity of manual jobs such as gardening, caring for the animals, or farming.
He lived on the Brook Farm community from 1841 to 1846 and was one of the trustees, but left because his ideals for social change were never reached.

Although many had found their time spent at Brook Farm to have been very personally worthwhile the trustees reluctantly accepted that the Association's assets would have to be completely disposed of.
