Brooklands was a motor racing circuit in Surrey, England.
Brooklands was also home to an air-base, which in 1909 saw the first flight of an English aircraft by an English pilot - Alliot Verdon-Roe[?].
The remaining sections of track were the subject of a preservation order in 2001, rendering illegal any subsequent destuction of the circuit.

Brooklands served not only as a racing facility but also a test track and was the venue for many of the early Land Speed Record attempts.

In 1998 we were called upon to create a set of parameters from which a computer game could be written based on motor racing at Brooklands in the period between the two world wars.
These heavy cars were at their best on the Brooklands Outer Circuit which had no severe corners requiring sudden direction changes and no requirement for violent braking.
One can therefore split Brooklands racing into two parts, the Big Bangers which raced on the banked Outer Circuit and the later cars racing on the several road racing style circuit layouts consisting partly of flat stretches of track and partly of the Brooklands Banking.

Brooklands is definitely my favourite motorsport site, because it is the first purpose-built circuit in the history and it lies in the country of motorsport.
In fact, putting together the DaimlerChrysler’s land with the land managed by the Brooklands Society, with the purchase of few other real estates (offices of the Gallaher Tobaccos?), the building of a wonderful circuit would be possible.
Its shape recalls the original Brooklands circuit: it includes two long parts of the 1907 circuit and other two of the 1937 one.

The last Land Speed Record achieved at Brooklands was when Kenelm Lee Guinness, a member of the famous brewing family, drove the 350hp single seater Sunbeam at a two-way average speed of 135.75mph.
By the end of the 1930s Brooklands was dominating the Land Speed Record in every way with the exception of actually being the venue itself.
It was commissioned and driven by the Brooklands ace, John Rhodes Cobb, who took the Land Speed Record in it in 1938, 1939 and again in 1947 when he became the first man to exceed 400 mph on land.
