Early Rapid Transit in Brooklyn, 1878 to 1913
Brooklyn suburbs were areas such as Midwood, Bensonhurst, and if you were wealthy and didn't mind a long ride, the ocean areas of Brighton Beach, Manhattan Beach and Coney Island.
In 1873, Corbin and his family moved to Coney Island on the advice of his son's doctor, for his son was gravely ill and the doctor recommended the sea and salt air for comfort.
In 1886, the Coney Island Elevated was reorganized as the Sea View Railroad and purchased by the BRT in 1897.

What followed was John Wyckoff's Coney Island House in 1840 and then additional tourist development began in 1846 in the far westerly point of the beach (and also closest to Manhattan by boat) that was later to be known as Norton's Point or Coney Island Point (now Sea Gate).
Coney Island's three big luxury hotels, the Manhattan Beach, the Oriental, and the Brighton Beach, were surely the epitome of a gracious and leisurely age, a unique expression of their era.
Coney Island's seedier section was immediatley to the west so it was frequented by the upper middle class rather than the "old money" wealthy.

SHELL ROAD: During the early 19th century there was considerable discussion in the community of Gravesend of building a shell road across the creek to the nearby beach, since the only existing approach involved crossing the creek at low tide.
He advised that “the bathing dress should be made of woolen fabric...as it retains the heat of the body and therefore prevents a too rapid evaporation.
The beach at Coney Island Point was booming because it was close to Manhattan by boat and it attracted many of Boss Tweed's corrupt friends, who frequented the beach on summer weekends.

All of these modes are completely grade-separated from road and pedestrian crossings, and most crossings of two subway tracks are grade-separated with flying junctions.
The oldest right-of-way, that of the BMT West End Line, was in use in 1863 as a steam railroad called the Brooklyn, Bath and Coney Island Rail Road.
The Staten Island Railway operates with R44 subway cars on a fully grade-separated right-of-way, but is typically not considered part of the subway, and is connected only via the free, city-operated Staten Island Ferry.

 The Neighborhoods of Brooklyn
Bath Beach, named for the English spa of Bath, was developed as a retreat for well-to-do families who escaped the city on weekends to sail, sunbathe, and swim.
Bath Beach was a part of the original Brooklyn town of New Utrecht, and before its heyday it was rural and sleepy.
The 58-acre Shore Road Park --which connects Owl's Head Park at the northern end of Bay Ridge to the southernmost Fort Hamilton area--boasts a two-and-a-half mile winding path on which walkers, joggers, and roller-bladers enjoy breathtakingly clear views of the New York City harbor.

The New BMT Coney Island Terminal by Paul Matus - The Third Rail - May 2003
When the little trains of Charles Gunther's Brooklyn, Bath and Coney Island Railroad first crossed the Gravesend marshes to reach Coney Island on June 8, 1864, visitors found a typically sunny Long Island barrier beach, home to dunes, beach plums nd rabbits.
To be sure, it wasn't completely deserted; nearly four decades earlier a shell road was built, and Coney's first resort hotel, the Coney Island House, opened its doors for business.
This was not an ideal journey, and in the late 1870s there was a veritable boom of steam railways, each seeking another way to bring beachgoers to the sea and relieve them of a portion of their funds in ticket sales before it was all spent on refreshments, hotel rooms and Three-Card Monte dealers.

The Third Rail - Gunther and his Railroad - page 1
The date of the opening of the Brooklyn, Bath and Coney Island (West End Line) is a matter of some dispute, with dates of 1862, 1864, 1865 and 1867 showing up in current histories.
Lately it seems that the general consensus is that the line reached Bath Beach in 1864 and ran through to Coney Island in 1867.
The date is of a little historic import in that this was the first steam road to reach Coney and a bit of the original (albeit many times renewed) right-of-way exists and, if it predates 1865, it may be the oldest surviving original rapid transit right-of-way on the New York City subway system.

 Coney-Transportation
The Brooklyn, Bath and Coney Island Railroad initially ran to Bath Beach (where 18th Avenue meets the shore of the Lower Bay, north of Coney Island) in 1864.
The line, which ran from 25th and 5th Avenue in Brooklyn, where it connected to horsecars, was extended to Coney Island in 1867.
Where Coney was visited primarily by the rich in the 19th century and later by the middle class, who could both afford the island's food and entertainment, this new group was different and poor.

There were dirt roads that wended their way between the farms known as Kouwenhoven Lane, Bergen Lane (today's 47th Street) and Lott Lane.
The main drag, though, in the pre-1850 era was known as the Road From New Utrecht to Flatbush, which was literally true, since the borderline between the two towns lay approximately where today's 45th Street is today.
Old New Utrecht Road continued in a generally southerly direction until it reached the junction of 18th Avenue, 53rd Street, and the Long Island Rail Road's Bay Ridge Branch.

Dutch officials assured Lady Moody that the local indians belonged to the big-animal Bear Band known as Konoh, and were no danger since they only used the oceanfront area as a hideout for women and children.
On May 7, 1654 an Indian named Guttaquoh, declared to be the owner of "Coyne Island *," (he called it Narrioch) formally put his mark on a deed conveying the Island to the forty Gravesend patentees.
Judge Egbert Benson, in a report to the New York Historical Society in 1816, argued that "Coney" came from "Conyn" the name of a Dutch family that once lived at the beach.

In 1885 a connection was made with Andrew Culver’s Prospect Park and Coney Island RR (the current Culver line –; F train) at Parkville, which enabled Culver trains to go to Manhattan Beach.
The Brooklyn Rapid Transit (BRT) system had been busily uniting all the various rapid transit lines and in late 1896 a connection between the Fulton St. El and the Brighton line, long and successfully opposed by Corbin, was made which cut into Manhattan Beach revenues.
