Brooklyn Heights remained intact, as the expressway was moved four blocks to the west and redesigned into a bluff-hugging, double-level roadway topped by the Promenade and its magnificent Manhattan panorama.
For a brief period in late 1958, the expressway was proposed to carry the I-87 designation from EXIT 32 (Williamsburg Bridge / Metropolitan Avenue) north to the Triborough Bridge (and thence to the Major Deegan Expressway); I-278 was to begin at the Williamsburg Bridge exit and continue to the south and west.
Further north in Queens, the expressway was rebuilt from Broadway north to 25th Avenue in Woodside.

At a hearing last week on reconstruction of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, community groups in Jackson Heights, Queens demanded assurances that the NY State DOT will reduce the highway's impact on their community.
Community groups along the BQE cite concerns very similar to those articulated by the civic organizations that formed the Gowanus Expressway Community Coalition - air and noise pollution, the highway's division of communities and NYS DOT's failure to provide alternative methods of transportation to decongest the highway.
The state DOT intends to rebuild and widen several sections of the BQE beginning in the summer, 1999.

The Brooklyn Queens Expressway Landscape Enhancement Project (BQELEP) was developed by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to reduce air pollution by planting trees and other vegetation along the BQE.
DEP selected the landscape architecture firm Johansson and Walcavage in Brooklyn to: design the specific locations of plantings along the BQE; collect information about native tree species and the most effective methods of planting in urban conditions; and, implement a public education program.
The section of the BQE in the project study area is under the jurisdiction of the New York City Department of Transportation.

The Williamsburg Bridge is a suspension bridge in New York City across the East River connecting Manhattan at Delancey St. with the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn on Long Island at Broadway near the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (Interstate 278).
For a while the Long Island Rail Road used the tracks in the center of the bridge in tandem with the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company elevated railroad; today the New York City Subway J, M and Z trains use these tracks.

The expressway in the area straddling the Greenpoint and Williamsburg neighborhoods of Brooklyn, just across the East River from Lower Manhattan, has long been used by the homeless because it provides shelter from wind and rain.
Ironically, on the same day as the deaths of the homeless man under the Brooklyn highway and the Bronx family killed by carbon monoxide, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that his administration was setting up a task force to end chronic homelessness in the next 10 years.
The section of the highway where the man was killed is also just a short distance from an all-night diner, a church where food is sometimes distributed to the homeless, and a day labor agency.
