Lawrence BrooksHays was born in rural Arkansas on August 9, 1898.
Brooks, as he later chose to be called, diligently served his state, his country, and his church while being one of the most vilified and glorified men of his generation.
Hays served as legal adviser to the Arkansas branch of the NRA, which allowed him to travel the state where he witnessed the extreme poverty that affected the masses of rural Arkansans.
In addition to his service in state and national politics, Hays was an active and devout Baptist, serving as the president of the Southern Baptist Convention from 1957 to 1959.
BrooksHays donated his papers to the University of Arkansas Libraries in several increments between 1975 and 1978.
In 1992 Hays's widow, Marion Prather Hays, and William E. Bell of Washington, D. C., donated a third collection, described separately as Addenda, MC 1164.
The papers in this accession consist mostly of memorabilia collected by Hays and his wife, Marion, documenting Hays's career and numerous speaking engagements.
Newspaper and magazine articles written by BrooksHays; newspaper and magazine articles about Hays; political cartoons drawn by Hays and others; memorabilia and scrapbooks kept by Hays or his wife, Marion.
Photographs, primarily of BrooksHays and his wife, Marion, at ceremonial functions and speaking engagements.
Representative BrooksHays (Dem., Ark.), a "self-imposed consultant" in the Little Rock integration crisis, urged yesterday that the city's "latent leadership" mobilize itself to find a solution.
Hays acted as mediator between President Eisenhower and Governor Faubus and arranged the meeting between them that preceded the president's use of federal troops to carry out federal court orders integrating Little Rock Central High School.
Hays in 1953 predicted that if the United States Supreme Court ordered public schools integrated, as it did the following year there would be trouble.
The timeless characters of the earliest period in biblical history come alive in contemporary language and reveal again the ageless wisdom gained from their experience of the human encounter with the divine.
Brook's favorite term for Marion was "l.m." (little manager).
Marion Prather Hays, English teacher, newspaper columnist, and Washington, D.C. Sunday school teacher, is best known as the co-worker and wife of the late BrooksHays, former United Stated senator from Arkansas.
